What You'll Do
We are looking for an experienced product counsel to join our team that supports Cisco’s Security business, the largest enterprise cybersecurity company in the world. As Product Counsel, your support of this business starts at product inception and continues throughout the product lifecycle. You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams around the globe, including product management, engineering, business development and go-to-market teams. You’ll also partner with subject matter experts within Legal to provide business centric advice across the product portfolio. Areas of focus include privacy, data security, intellectual property rights, market access and related regulatory issues. You will also play a meaningful role in shaping and implementing policies that help the Legal team improve go-to-market motions and scale as Cisco continues to grow and evolve its software and cloud-based businesses.
This role also requires you to work with our Sales Legal team to respond to customer product transactions, educate customers and partners about the legal frameworks that apply to our various security products, partner with Cisco’s regulatory or privacy counsel to improve and create new product development processes, and work with corporate development teams to integrate newly acquired businesses.
The Product Counsel team differentiates itself through a deep understanding of Cisco’s products and offers. We serve as the primary legal interface with Engineering and the commercial teams that bring Cisco’s various security products to market. Daily work includes:
Developing a strong understanding of product functionality and applicable legal/regulatory limitations, with a specific focus on cloud and SaaS products.
Building and maintaining strong relationships with product development and engineering teams and advising multiple levels of management on legal issues, including executive level support.
Reviewing and negotiating agreements with strategic partners, vendors and customers, including OEM, marketplace, alliance, joint marketing and co-development agreements.
Working with Cisco’s Privacy Office to implement privacy compliance and privacy by design principles.
Assisting with the acquisition and integration of products, content, services and technologies for newly acquired technologies and businesses.
Building cross-functional relationships with operations, finance, supply chain, IP, Privacy and other members of the Legal team .
Advising the Security business leaders regarding strategic legal issues with a pro-business focus.
Providing product expertise to other teams within Legal in connection with customer escalations.
Who You Are
The successful candidate is a highly motivated, solutions-driven and tech-savvy attorney who is excited about working in a collaborative environment with the team of lawyers that supports Cisco’s growing Security business. You must have excellent legal and business judgment, possess strong critical thinking and writing skills, and maintain a proven work ethic. In addition, having a genuine curiosity about cybersecurity and technology is needed to help communicate with the clients.
You should be able to work independently, as well as collaboratively and flexibly, in a dynamic environment that requires work across both Legal and non-Legal teams. You must be able to adapt your approach and demeanor to match shifting demands of the business and to problem solve with speed and organization. Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and advanced interpersonal and influencing abilities to build trusted relationships with the business and Legal teammates is a must.
Our minimum requirements for this role include:
6+ years of relevant legal, in-house and law firm experience. J.D. and excellent academic credentials. State Bar member in good standing. Substantial software and cloud/SaaS transactional experience. Experience with privacy and data protection/security issues, including strong knowledge of global privacy laws, particularly GDPR. Certifications (such as CIPP/E) are a plus. Solid knowledge of intellectual property contracting and product development issues, including open source. Strong collaborator who will work closely with product management and engineers to develop a deep understanding of their product portfolio. Intellectual curiosity to learn about new technologies, cybersecurity and understand product architecture. Validated leadership skills and track record for building business relationships and gaining client trust. Practical business judgment and understanding of the difference between legal requirements and business risk. Ability to understand and synthesize complex issues, assess risk, and provide concise, plain English, business-focused legal advice, including to senior executive leadership. Strong organizational and program management skills and the ability to prioritize and handle several simultaneous projects for multiple businesses under deadline pressure.
