Job Description

Thermo Fisher’s Analytical Instruments Group (AIG) provides complex technologies to analyze virtually any sample type including proteins and their structure, inorganic materials at atomic resolution, and chemicals and their composition. Our mass spectrometry, electron microscopy and spectroscopic technologies have been crucial in advancing industrial processes and have helped answer foundational questions in the sciences.

This cross-division role will lead a team of experienced US patent attorneys and interact with similar global IP teams to protect Thermo Fisher’s significant investment in bringing usable, intelligent, physics-based instrumentation to the market.

The successful candidate will possess a strategic mindset, a strong technical background, proven leadership skills, and the ability to sense common themes and develop business-oriented solutions. They will be joining a high-performing IP team that prides itself on delivering strong, defensible patents and thoughtful counseling to business and R&D leadership.

This role reports directly to the Vice President, Intellectual Property, of the Analytical Instruments Group.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Expand Business Leadership’s ability to use intellectual property as a commercial lever by developing tight connections between IP strategy and product/research roadmaps, and directing uniform, and actionable, competitive IP monitoring.
  • Drive common principles for risk mitigation with regard to product launch, collaborations with significant potential for IP generation, trade secret and confidential information protection.
  • Work with internal litigation partners to develop and pursue enforcement strategies for opportunities of broad magnitude.
  • Inspire direct reports to build leadership capabilities as Thermo Fisher continues to grow in line with its 2030 Vision.


Required Experience and Skills:

  • Fifteen or more years of experience in a broad spectrum of intellectual property practice ranging from preparation and prosecution to enforcement and licensing.
  • Advanced degree in a field related to AIG technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically about intellectual property, appropriately assess risk, and balance these through a business-focused lens.
  • Experienced people leader with at least five years of experience developing and leading high-performing teams of attorneys and legal professionals. This leader sets a high bar for performance and develops others in their wake.
  • Admission to a state bar and registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience at premier patent law firm or AmLaw 200 firm.
  • Experience with European or other international patent protection regimes.
