The Opportunity
WSDOT Risk Management and Legal Services Division is searching for a Paralegal 2 to join their team in the Olympia, WA office. In this unique role, the incumbent will provide litigation support to WSDOT and the Attorney General’s Office, including managing the discovery and litigation hold notice processes, and responding to subpoenas. The incumbent will also manage WSDOT’s Administrative Procedures Act (APA) rulemaking and administrative hearing activities. The incumbent will be the designated point of contact for discovery and will work with all WSDOT offices and the Attorney General’s Office to respond to discovery requests in litigation to which the department is a party. What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Paralegal 2 will:


  • Manage the process for responding to discovery requests by working with the Attorney General’s Office and WSDOT staff to determine what information is being requested, and to locate and produce responsive records and information.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to staff regarding application of laws and rules regarding discovery and subpoenas.
  • Perform legal research.
  • Implement the litigation hold program to ensure proper preservation of potential evidence.
  • Respond to subpoenas.
  • Provide consultation and technical assistance to offices involved in administrative hearings.
  • Manage WSDOT rulemaking function.
  • Coordinate Request for Defense requests from WSDOT employees.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Graduation from an accredited two-year paralegal program.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a paralegal.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Experience with the APA rule making process.
  • Some training in investigative techniques.
  • Advanced computer skills.

Important Notes
  • Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, this position will be remote in a telework capacity full-time. Once the restrictions are lifted, WSDOT supports a flexible work schedule with partial telework opportunities, depending on business needs and prior supervisor approval.
