This role oversees and develops attorneys and support staff on matters relating to the rights, privileges, and obligations of Quartz and its affiliated health insurance companies. The Deputy General Counsel also leads projects, research and transactions relating to high-level organizational strategy.

Responsibilities:
  • Counsel executive leadership and business leaders to support corporate strategy and organizational goals
  • Provide overall administration, direction, coordination, and evaluation of the legal functions, staff and activities of Quartz and is specifically responsible for the following areas:
    • Subrogation, intellectual property, contract management and review, and selection and oversight of outside counsel.
  • Direct the activities of the Attorneys and Legal staff which includes but is not limited to:
    • Select, motivate, train, and retain staff while providing opportunities for professional development
    • Individual performance management, including regular appraisals and any improvement and/or discipline processes and terminations, as appropriate
    • Identify and implement opportunities to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency and increase engagement of the staff
Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited Law School, with license to practice in Wisconsin
  • 7+ years of experience in health law - regulatory and transactional experience, preferably in a managed care setting
  • 3+ years of experience overseeing the work of others is preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work with a high degree of diplomacy and influence to build effective relationships with staff at all levels of the organization
  • Strong initiative, good judgement, and the ability to make ethical decisions in a timely fashion
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure and independently manage multiple assignments simultaneously to complete projects in a timely manner
  • Conscientious, careful listener who can effectively convey an organization’s strategy, goals, and direction

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this full-time role will start out working remotely. As things improve with the pandemic, this position will transition fully to work from our office located in Madison, WI. Hardware and equipment will be provided by the company, but candidates must have access to high-speed, non-satellite Internet to successfully work from home.
