Associate Attorney II (remote or hybrid)

Summary: The ideal candidate has a background in insurance coverage and/or insurance defense. The Associate Attorney will show a commitment to exceptional client service, have experience in litigation, possess top quality writing skills, and possess the ability to excel in a fast-paced and challenging environment.

NOTE: 
This position is eligible for remote work after training is completed, in accordance with UPC’s Telecommuting / Remote Work Policy.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Prepares for and conducts court appearances, depositions, motion practice, arbitrations, mediations, and trials.
  • Works on timely responses to Civil Remedy Notices/bad faith claims.
  • Reviews new file assignments, develops a litigation strategy, files initial pleadings, and propounds discovery.
  • Drafts reports, internal memoranda, correspondence, and pleadings.
  • Regularly communicates with client, including strategy conferences.
  • Prepares client/witnesses for depositions, arbitrations, and mediations.
  • Stays up to date on relevant statutes, case law, and local county rules.
  • Maintains a high ethical standard.
  • Works collaboratively with lead attorney and support staff.
  • Travel for business, as required (up to 25%).

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Assists in overseeing the work of the in-house counsel staff and external professional service provider(s) engaged to assist the in-house counsel staff in executing their responsibilities.

 

Education and/or Experience: 

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school; an active state bar license (preferably Florida)
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in insurance-related legal work. 

Required Skills:

  • Experience in Property & Casualty industry preferred.
  • Able to apply knowledge gained through legal research of relevant case law and controlling statutory authority.  
  • Capable of independent decision-making and prioritization.
  • Must be able to work in a capacity with strict privacy and confidentiality requirements both inside and outside the organization.
  • Prior experience with fact and expert witness depositions, motion hearings, and pleading/motion preparation.
  • Must be hard-working and self-motivated with an interest in fast-paced litigation.
  • Highly motivated and a strategic thinker providing ethical and diligent results.
  • Advanced drafting skills and a proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • Excellent grammar with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent listening and public speaking skills.
