Facebook seeks a highly motivated and experienced attorney to serve as Associate General Counsel, Energy. This full-time position will report to the San Francisco-based Director & Associate General Counsel, Real Estate and work closely with Facebook’s Energy Team, members of which are dispersed across the United States. This is a great opportunity to join a growing legal team and work in an exciting, fast-paced environment. This role will play a key role and help enable Facebook to maintain its commitment to 100% renewable energy while growing the company’s portfolio of data centers.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the procurement of clean and renewable energy for Facebook’s data centers. Given the geographic diversity of our data center portfolio, our energy suppliers include regulated and deregulated utilities, energy co-ops, and other energy suppliers. These supply arrangements range from basic to “sleeved” renewable supply arrangements, including through the development of new green tariffs
  • Work with Facebook’s Energy, Environment and Site Selection Team and to secure the energy infrastructure necessary to support Facebook’s data centers. This work would include drafting and negotiating agreements with utilities and energy transmission operators for the expansion of their infrastructure to serve Facebook’s data center load
  • Provide in-house legal support for Facebook’s monitoring and participation in proceedings before public utilities commissions that impact our energy supply and infrastructure arrangements, as well as other proceedings that impact Facebook’s access to and costs for energy supply in a particular region such as rate cases, rulemakings, and integrated resource plans
  • Support Facebook’s CaRE (Clean & Renewable Energy) Team with the procurement of green energy for our data centers. This work would include the negotiation of virtual PPAs, REC purchase agreements, sleeved PPAs, and energy storage agreements among other things
  • Assist with other strategic initiatives that further Facebook’s commitment to clean and renewable energy
  • Assist Facebook’s Energy Team with operational issues relating to our large portfolio of energy related projects and contracts
  • Flag issues and seek guidance from other subject matter experts as needed (e.g., risk management, finance, tax, etc.)
  • Hire, closely manage, and direct outside counsel
Minimum Qualification
  • J.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) and membership in at least one US state bar
  • 8+ years of legal experience, including at a law firm and/or in-house experience
  • Experience drafting and negotiating contracts
Preferred Qualification
  • Experience structuring, drafting, and negotiating sleeved green energy supply arrangements and tariffs for industrial energy consumers (e.g., data center, manufacturing, and similar projects)
  • Experience monitoring or participating in ratemaking and resource planning proceedings before public utilities commissions
  • Experience working at or with a technology company
