West Yorkshire Combined Authority are seeking to appoint a highly motivated Property Lawyer to join our Legal Services team.

It is an exciting time to be joining the Combined Authority, following the announcement of a £1.8bn devolution deal that has been secured for West Yorkshire. Devolution will enable us to drive up living standards for local communities while tackling the climate emergency and help deliver our commitment to become a net zero carbon city region by 2038.

The Role

Please note this role is not a managerial post and there is no prerequisite for Compulsory Purchase experience.

Reporting into Head of Service your key responsibilities will include:
  • Advise on freehold and leasehold property transactions and related matters.
  • Advise the CA in relation to any of its projects which have property or development implications for example in the fields of public transport, infrastructure, investment, skills capital, housing and regeneration, environmental and energy sectors.
  • Liaise with the CA’s external Property Surveyors as required to ensure and enable the best use of the CA’s property assets from a commercial and practical point of view.
  • Use strong analytical skills, sound judgment and application of legal knowledge and expertise to provide accurate and solution focussed advice which demonstrates a thorough understanding of the aims and objectives of the CA.
  • Experience of advising on all aspects of real property including drafting, scrutinising and negotiating a wide range of conveyances/ transfers, leases, tenancy agreements, wayleaves and licences and any associated documents in relation to the organisation’s property portfolio.
About You

You will have the following key skills, attributes, education and experience :

You will have an excellent track record of providing pro-active, customer focused and authoritative legal advice and support in relation to this function including advising on large scale projects preferably within a public sector or transport environment, matters of procurement and state aid and negotiating and preparing complex contractual documentation.

You will be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister with a current practicing certificate or full CILEX (fellowship) qualification.

Whilst experience in the key responsibilities is desirable, we are happy to consider applicants who have transferrable skills and a strong work ethic to enable development into the role.

Please note this is not a managerial role and there is no prerequisite for experience in Compulsory Purchase.
