About the Role:

Under the supervision of the Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel, the Chief Counsel (Labor & Employment / Litigation) will provide employment and labor law expertise to the Legal, People Experience, and senior leadership teams. The Chief Counsel will help build the foundation for success and scalability in a hyper-growth environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with and advise the People Experience team on medium and high risk employment-related issues including recruitment and hiring, equal pay, leaves of absence, investigations, disciplinary action, terminations, workplace safety, reductions in force, immigration and international policies
  • Stay up-to-date on relevant federal, state, and local labor/employment laws across the United States
  • Assist with company litigation (single plaintiff and class), arbitrations, grievances and associated administrative charges
  • Draft, review, and enforce a wide range of internal employment documents, including employment contracts, internal policies and handbooks, separation, non-competition, confidentiality and consulting agreements
  • Implement and monitor training modules on labor/employment-related topics for compliance purposes
  • Work with senior leadership team to to ensure all required compliance reports are completed on time, and maintain records appropriately
  • Oversee all facets of the company's litigation docket, including: case management; pleadings; discovery; motions and court appearances; insurance tenders; case evaluation and settlement; medical evaluations; allocation of resources; strategic use of third-party service providers; hiring and overseeing outside counsel and litigation budgets; managing litigation risk; counseling clients on lessons learned and risk mitigation; managing and reporting on case progress, results, and key litigation performance metrics.
  • Lead or oversee certain internal investigations.
  • Oversee and continuously improve the team's written procedures, forms, practices, and protocols for resolving claims, managing litigations, managing outside counsel, identifying and using legal services vendors, handling subpoenas, insurance takeovers, etc.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of cases to ensure they are being handled per expectations, policy, and protocols.
  • Report on cases progress, reserves, litigation exposure, outcomes (favorable/unfavorable), average cost for resolving a case, cost of handling a case, and other performance metrics.
  • Provide timely, accurate, clear, and concise legal advice on complex litigation and insurance related issues to operational and business clients, external auditors, and senior leadership.

Qualifications:

  • JD (or foreign equivalent) and bar admission to practice in NY, CA, TX or MA preferred
  • 12+ years of professional experience, ideally in a high growth dynamic environment
  • At least 6+ years' people management experience
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to coordinate effectively and gain trust and confidence with personnel at many different levels
  • Ability to work as a team member of the legal department in a scalable, autonomous and accountable manner
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with both internal departments and external business clients while addressing complex issues in an accurate, clear, and thorough manner
