This is a unique opportunity to join a highly engaged in-house global employment, benefits and compensation law team responsible for ensuring compliance with and counseling and supporting HR and management on employment, benefits and compensation policies, plans procedures, and practices affecting Cigna's nearly 70,000 + employees around the world.

This Counsel position is an individual contributor role that is part of a dynamic in-house legal team. The role reports to the Senior Counsel, Global Employment, Benefits and Compensation Law. The role will support employee benefits and compensation matters for the company, with a particular emphasis on Cigna’s health and welfare benefit programs for its employees.

Successful candidates must work effectively on supporting the employment, benefits and compensation law team, but also on developing and managing relationships with business clients at all levels of the organization.

As a member of the global employment, benefits and compensation law team, an ideal candidate will be expected to:
Support other attorneys on the team in providing strategic advice and collaboration regarding benefits and compensation law matters to the Human Resources team. This position will require experience with ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code and other benefits and compensation related laws, particularly as they related to health and welfare plans and programs.
Advise on targeted HR issues to ensure sound practices and legal compliance.
Counsel on various health and welfare plan issues and support Cigna's wellness programs.
Support Cigna's HR Operations function regarding payroll tax issues in a dynamic and ever-changing environment
Draft and review various documents, including policies, procedures, plan documents, communications, legal memoranda and correspondence.
Collaborate with senior counsel to provide legal support to Cigna’s benefits fiduciary committees, including attending committee meetings and drafting meeting minutes.
Conduct legal research to ensure Cigna is providing our innovative HR benefits and compensation offerings in accordance with best practices in the locations where we conduct our business.
Support the development and implementation of internal practices and policies to ensure ongoing compliance with applicable laws and regulations at the local, state, national, and international levels.
Participate in and help facilitate internal training sessions.
Forge strong relationships with internal clients and external counsel.
Partner closely with employment, benefits and compensation law colleagues.
Effectively direct, manage, and develop outside counsel where needed.
Employ highly polished and effective communication, listening, and writing skills, with a focus on interaction with and reporting to senior attorneys, managers and executive leadership within a global and matrixed organization
Participate in and contribute positively to the Cigna Legal community

Qualifications:
J.D. degree and active Bar membership
Minimum of 3-4 years of employment and/or benefits law experience at a top firm and/or in-house
Demonstrated expertise in health and welfare and wellness plan issues
Experience with ERISA fiduciary issues and legal support of ERISA fiduciaries
Global experience is a plus
Experience with payroll tax issues and state and local payroll tax rules is a plus
Ability to distill and present complex legal issues to non-lawyers
Demonstrated good and practical judgment
Team focus

Willingness to take on difficult projects

This position is not eligible to be performed in Colorado.
