Patent Attorney or Agent

NXP’s global Patent Creation team is seeking a highly-qualified patent attorney or patent agent to work with the team in San Jose, California or Chandler, Arizona. The Patent Creation team is part of NXP’s Legal Department, and is responsible for generating and managing the company’s portfolio of about 17,000 worldwide patent assets.

Job Summary:

  • NXP Semiconductors is seeking a registered patent attorney with 3-8 years of experience or a registered patent agent with a minimum of 5 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution to join our global Patent Creation team in San Jose, California or Chandler, Arizona.
  • The responsibilities associated with this position will include approximately 70% patent preparation and prosecution before the US Patent and Trademark Office. Additional responsibilities include patent portfolio management, invention disclosure review, outside counsel management, inventor counseling, foreign patent filing and prosecution, and other invention disclosure generation and patenting activities.

Key Challenges:

  • Must have very strong technical writing skills, as evidenced with writing samples.
  • Must be adept at working with other members of the Patent Creation team to achieve the goals of the department.
  • Must be able to effectively manage a patent prosecution docket.
  • Must be able to work with engineers to identify and protect patentable aspects of NXP technology and to communicate those aspects to others, including preparing patent applications for filing in the US and foreign patent offices.

Cross functional aspects:

  • Must be able to effectively communicate legal and technical matters with engineers, co-workers, NXP invention review committees, managers, and outside counsel located around the world.

Job Qualifications:

  • A USPTO registration number is required.
  • BS or MS in electrical engineering (EE) is highly preferred. For other degrees, candidates with extensive patent prosecution experience in the below technologies may be considered, or candidates who have completed at least 30 hours of EE classes as part of their degree requirements.
  • Experience with integrated circuit device/processing technologies is required, preferably including experience with semiconductor processing, memories, digital circuitry, analog circuitry, RF devices and systems, radar, transistor devices, MEMS sensors, microprocessor design and operation, semiconductor device packaging, software, data communications, electronic systems, wireless communications, and/or networks.
  • Experience with participating in global invention assessment processes, including working with NXP invention review committees based outside the U.S., is preferred, as is the ability and desire to work with non-US-based inventors and foreign outside counsel.
