Position Overview:

We are seeking a creative problem solver, strong advocate, and skilled Senior Attorney in its Washington D.C. office to serve as the Deputy Director and Senior Staff Attorney for our Justice Project – Policing Program. The Justice Project provides support to grassroots racial justice campaigns seeking not simply to reform, but to wholly dismantle systems that criminalize and incarcerate people of color. We aim to help impacted communities define the terms and control how peace is realized in their streets and neighborhoods and to re-imagine public safety for themselves.
This position will report to the Program Director for Justice Project.

What you’ll do: *

Assist with establishing, managing and executing strategic initiatives for Justice Project__

*

  • Lead and manage teams and projects.
  • Conduct legal and policy research, draft legal memoranda and policy documents, and make related strategy recommendations.
  • Engage national and local grassroots partners to strategize and build public support for campaigns, and provides legal and policy support to local partners.
  • Cultivate and manage strategic multiracial relationships, coalitions, and partnerships with stakeholders.
  • Participate in national and local partnerships and represents the organization at national and local coalition meetings related to assigned projects.
  • Support litigation as needed, including preparation of materials, legal research, and motion writing.
  • Serve as media spokesperson as needed for assigned project area.

Enhance the organization’s capacity to advocate on issues related to the Justice Project

  • Provide education, training, reports and direct feedback to team members.
  • Collaborate internally on issues that impact multiple project areas to ensure a consistent and coordinated effort and message.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on issues related to assigned project area.

Collaborate with other teams on the management and planning of programs and project efforts

  • Work cross-programmatically and through interdisciplinary approaches to ensure program and projects efforts are internally supported appropriately by various teams.
  • Share information regarding movement on program and projects initiatives across the organization.
  • Works closely with campaign strategy team and communications team to implement planned strategies.

Provide leadership and management within the Justice Project Team

  • Assist the Program Director creating work plans and overseeing work product.
  • Assist Development Department with budgets, fundraising and reports related to assigned projects.
  • Directly manage team members, including training, assigning and directing work, evaluating and providing performance feedback, annual performance reviews and formal disciplinary actions, and assisting with addressing employee concerns.
  • Participate in the recruitment of new employees, including interviewing and making hiring decisions, as well as making employee promotions or special assignments.
  • Disseminate, implement and enforce organization and team standards, policies, and procedures, including providing proper guidance to those carrying out related duties.
  • Other related duties, as assigned.

What you need to be considered:

  • A minimum of 6 years of relevant legal experience in a similar position and/or performing similar tasks.
  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited college or university.
  • License to practice law in Washington D.C. or possess the ability to waive into the Washington D.C. bar.
  • At least three years’ experience managing people.
  • Ability to frequently travel locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • Ability to consistently work evenings and frequent work weekends, as needed.
