The Legal Department of JPMorgan Chase & Co is responsible for the provision of legal services to the Corporation and is organized by practice groups that generally align with the Corporation's lines of business and corporate staff areas. This structure encourages legal teams and businesses and staff areas to discuss legal, regulatory and business developments effectively and in a timely manner.

Regulatory Advocacy Law Team For Consumer And Community Banking

The primary function of the Regulatory Advocacy Law Team is to provide transactional, regulatory and strategic legal support for various areas within Consumer and Community Banking (CCB) including Home, Credit Card, and Automobile Lending and Small Business Banking and Consumer Branch Banking

Job Responsibilities

This position is for a State Assistant General Counsel. The individual will be part of a team responsible for special projects related to all aspects of compliance with state laws affecting the bank's products and services offered to consumers and small businesses. The team also advises the bank on regulatory guidance and changes at the federal level and provides legal support for CCB's interaction with federal regulatory agencies. The environment is dynamic, fast-paced, often requiring that issues be researched and addressed quickly to advise on legal matters with the rapidly-evolving regulatory environment that applies to our highly regulated industries.

Primary Responsibilities Will Include
  • Address questions from business representatives and compliance professionals regarding state and local legal issues and performing additional legal research as needed
  • Routinely research and analyze state statutes, case law and other laws to quickly assess impacts on CCB
  • Work with compliance, controls, business and other internal teams to identify and implement changes to documents, systems, policies and procedures to comply with the law
  • Assist all CCB product lines in interpreting regulatory guidance and communications from regulators that do not rise to the level of formal guidance.
  • Prepare, and maintain on an ongoing basis, matrices and other job aids, summarizing legal requirements for quick reference by various internal teams
  • Review policies, procedures, job aids and documentation related to proposed product, system and other changes, to identify, escalate and research state legal issues
  • Assist Chase Government Relations team in analyzing proposed changes to existing laws, determining impacts of proposed legislation, and developing Chase's corporate position with regard to such items
  • Other research to support special projects
Required Skills

Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor degree
  • 5 or more years experience working with legislation or regulation of financial services or other highly regulated industries
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Experience with WESTLAW
  • Strong interpersonal and advocacy skills
  • Licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction where the candidate will office. An in-house counsel certification is acceptable in states with an in-house practice rule.
Preferred Skills
  • Prior experience in financial services regulation, particularly with regard to regulation of automobile, credit card, small business, mortgage and home equity loans or branch banking operations.
  • License to practice law in multiple states a plus
  • Strong communication skill
