Position Summary

The Staff Attorney is a member of the International Corporate Headquarters (ICHQ) operations team providing support to the General Counsel/International Legal Advisor (ILA), performing fast-paced, mission-focused work related to legal research, legal document review, contract drafting, negotiation, and administration, tax, policy compliance, contentious/pre-ligation matters, and operational support on a wide range of legal issues. The Staff Attorney will triage legal inquiries and assist with the organizational management of legal documents, ensuring that the team has an effective system for storing and sourcing important information. This position is privy to highly sensitive sorority legal information and must hold such information in strict confidence, using discretion, and handling with professional care.

Essential Job Functions

  • Draft and negotiate contacts, MOUs, licenses, and other agreements; Monitor a database of contracts and report on contract metrics and deadlines for necessary action.
  • Manage tax compliance for chapters and regions and manage W-9 process for vendors and contractors; respond to inquiries from the chapter and regional leadership and third parties.
  • Draft and/or edit legal documents and perform legal research as directed by ILA as needed
  • Draft cease and desist letters to third parties and engage in other enforcement activities regarding misuse or infringement upon the Sorority’s intellectual property
  • Assist with disciplinary proceedings related to compliance with policies; assist with issuing appropriate correspondence and timely docket all matters.
  • Work with ICHQ and ILA to continuously improve legal processes and procedures identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and decrease cost.
  • Work across departments to share best practices and foster operational excellence throughout the International Corporate Headquarters team.
  • Work with ILA to develop and maintain a library of templates, legal forms, and legal resources.
  • Manage a database of all legal matters and track all legal inquires and requests; work with ILA and business owners to ensure timely response and review.
  • Provide other legal support to ILA as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have graduated from an approved and accredited school of law within the United States and licensed to practice law within at least one jurisdiction in the United States, preferably in North Carolina. If not currently licensed in North Carolina, able to be licensed to practice law in North Carolina within one year of employment
  • At least three (3) years experience practicing law in an in house, law firm or public service/judicial setting
  • Experience using contract templates, drafting contracts, and redlining contracts.
  • Analyzing facts, evidence, and precedents; conducting legal research
  • Interpreting laws, ordinances, and policies
  • Experience drafting, cite-checking, and correcting legal briefs or documents
  • Understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions with minimal supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with member/customer service approach.
  • Working knowledge and competency with case management or docketing software
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and DocuSign or Adobe Sign.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • A notary public license is a plus.
  • Nonprofit experience preferred.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Required frequently: sitting, repetitive hand and wrist movements, bending, reaching and the ability to lift approximately 15-25 lbs. Extensive sitting in front of the computer.
