Job Overview:

Legal and Compliance is responsible for managing all legal and regulatory matters, including contracts, corporate governance, general compliance, academic compliance, employment law matters, intellectual property, product counseling, government relations, and claims. The team includes dedicated teams that support every aspect of Coursera's platform, including university, enterprise and industry partnerships. This role will sit within the Corporate sub-team within Legal and Compliance.

We want a candidate who is energized by the challenges of working in a high-growth, fast-paced U.S. public company with global operations, who has significant expertise in managing employment topics and who has a strong desire to learn new areas of law. The successful candidate is comfortable working as part of an interdisciplinary team. This role will engage with all levels of employees and management, so interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) are vital.

We are looking for a highly experienced lawyer who can build efficient legal processes for the company and work cross-functionally with our People team on employment and HR-related matters for our growing global company. We seek an individual with a strong background in U.S. employment law and employment counseling, with experience counseling on international matters,  who can also adapt and apply their legal knowledge and skills to new situations and issues. The individual should be able to operate autonomously with a highly-practical, business-oriented approach to problem solving while being a team player who brings a positive, “can do” attitude to the workplace. This role requires an expert collaborator who can work with other members of the Legal and Compliance team and internal stakeholders. The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurial, organized, and comfortable working in an ever-changing environment while managing several simultaneous projects under deadline pressure.  The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, impeccable judgment, integrity, and commitment to ethics and equity while being comfortable interacting with senior leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise team members, cross-functional partners and business leaders  on general employment-law matters, HR best practices and ESG-related topics, including recruiting and hiring, restrictive covenants, compensation and benefits, accommodations and leaves of absence, performance management, terminations, internal investigations, worker classification, human capital management SEC reporting, and knowledge on ESG-related topics in the employment area. 
  • Work closely with our People team to draft and maintain employment- and compensation-related policies and procedures in each of our domestic and international jurisdictions
  • Draft and maintain our employment-related agreements domestically and internationally, including offer letters, employment contracts, contractor and consultant agreements, and separation agreements 
  • Collaborate cross-functionally on employment aspects of domestic and international expansion activities 
  • Work with HR business partners to manage and resolve employment disputes
  • Identify and assess legal risks and opportunities within the labor and employment area; advise and escalate accordingly, proposing creative solutions 
  • Manage outside counsel, particularly in international jurisdictions, as needed and in a cost-effective manner

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted to a State Bar, in active status, in good standing and able to practice law in your state of residence (or qualified as in-house counsel)
  • 7+ years of broad-based experience managing employment law matters in the U.S. and globally, preferably through a combination of in-house and law firm practice
  • Proven track record of providing reliable, pragmatic, solutions-oriented advice to HR and business partners 
  • Demonstrated success in resolving complex employment disputes and litigation, including lawsuits, administrative charges, investigations and demand letters

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of broad-based experience managing employment law matters in the U.S. and globally, preferably through a combination of in-house and law firm practice
  • Experience working in a public company or other fast-paced working environment 
  • Experience managing civil litigation and investigations 
  • Experience providing advice and support on employment-related topics in connection with M&A transactions
