SunPower’s legal team is looking for an experienced, creative, and energized attorney to advise our fast-moving team of product managers, engineers, and marketers on a variety of product development, consumer protection, privacy, regulatory, supply chain and intellectual property issues, and manage a team of lawyers and paralegals across product, supply chain, and intellectual property disciplines. This is a leadership role in a growing Legal department, supporting an expanding business. This role requires focus, drive, compassion, and thoughtfulness, and reports to the General Counsel. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on leadership with a focus on providing actionable and practical legal and business support and solutions to the Company
  • As a member of the Legal Leadership team, support and develop a team of lawyers and paralegals, and work across the Legal team to develop and implement best practices
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams including executive management, business leads, product managers, engineers, technical experts, and inventors
  • Partner with internal clients effectively throughout the product development lifecycle, leading brainstorming and invention harvesting sessions, advising on new products and features, identifying applicable legal constraints and product risks, proposing solutions and mitigation measures that facilitate business objectives
  • Proactively address and advise on product liability, reliability, and quality matters
  • Work with and advise the supply chain teams on supply chain strategies that mitigate business, legal and financial risk
  • Draft and negotiate commercial and intellectual property agreements affecting the company's products and services
  • Lead SunPower’s legal IP strategy needs, priorities, and resources, including patent cost reduction, monetization, and licensing opportunities
  • Support and develop a team of lawyers and paralegals

Other responsibilities

  • Performs special projects and responsibilities assigned by the General Counsel

Required Qualifications

  • J.D. and active member of the bar in good standing in any U.S. jurisdiction
  • 14 or more years of experience
  • OR equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Combination of law firm and in-house litigation experience
  • Experience with trade compliance
  • Strong foundation in drafting agreements and counseling on product and IP related issues, including relating to consumer protection, privacy, data protection, intellectual property protection and strategy, technology transactions and litigation
  • Basic financial reporting capabilities and ability to manage to budget
  • Experience and comfort working with senior executives
  • Capacity to think strategically to identify issues and develop long-term solutions
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously and manage major projects to successful completion
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a strong customer-focus orientation
  • Excellent presentation, facilitation, and project management skills, as well as the ability to navigate within a corporate environment and work with a variety of stakeholders
  • Strong technology skills
  • Organizational and management skills necessary for the development and implementation of procedures and guidelines
