GRAIL is seeking an Assistant General Counsel, Litigation to advise on a variety of complex legal issues, and help manage litigation involving IP.  This person would work closely with the Head of IP to proactively identify and address current and emerging risks, including pre-litigation disputes, and to mitigate and eliminate such risks.  This person would also partner with outside counsel to take an active role in any IP litigation disputes. 
 
The ideal candidate should live in or be willing to relocate to California.

You will:

  • Help direct IP-related adverse proceedings including, but not limited to, U.S. litigation, inter partes review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and oppositions before the European Patent Office (EPO).
  • Work closely with life science, computer science, and bioinformatics team members to help develop global IP strategies.
  • Monitor and analyze other companies’ IP and product offerings.

Your background should include:

  • Law degree from a nationally recognized law school and member of a state bar.
  • a minimum of 8+ years of experience in legal practice with a combination of large national law firm and in-house experience.
  • IP litigation experience, including but not limited to examining and defending witnesses, and trial experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Outside counsel management skills.
  • Registered to practice before the USPTO.
  • A degree (preferably graduate) in life sciences, computer science, machine learning, computational biology, or related technical field.
  • Experience working as in-house counsel in the diagnostic, medical device, biotech/pharmaceutical, and/or laboratory industry strongly preferred.
