The Vice President, Assistant General Counsel will provide legal guidance for all aspects of Renew Financial's business, including, but not limited to, overseeing outside and local counsel, as well as partnering with business teams to provide structuring and strategic advice on new initiatives and products. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Provide oversight and direction of Renew Financial’s Director of Compliance and Compliance Analyst, and actively participate on the company’s Executive Leadership Team.
  • Draft, review and negotiate various types of commercial agreements and drive contract negotiations in connection with the foregoing.
  • Oversee outside counsel in consumer litigation, regulatory enforcement, foreclosure, employment, insurance and other matters in a cost-effective manner including project management, effective budgeting and proper allocation of resources.
  • Advise the business on a wide range of day-to-day issues that require legal review, including issues relating to Renew Financial’s product and services, marketing, servicing, compliance, complaints, contractor management, privacy and fraud.
  • Assist the human resources team on legal issues relating to labor and employment law, company policies and internal staff investigations.
  • Assess new or changing federal, state, and local law and regulation, translate the same into clear rules for the business to interpret, and provide revisions where appropriate.
  • Partner with the finance team on accounting, collection and budgeting matters.
  • Provide legal guidance for entry into new territories and markets.
  • Oversee the completion of projects, including planning, assigning, monitoring, and reviewing progress and accuracy of work.

Requirements 

Required Qualifications: 

  • JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • 8+ years of related work experience working on financings or other corporate transactions
  • Registered to practice law in CA or NY

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with Consumer Finance or Securitizations (ABS)
  • Experience with Financial Institution Regulation and Compliance
  • Strong analytical and problem-resolution mindset; exceptional business judgment, with the ability to think strategically and give practical advice by balancing business needs with legal risks
  • Excellent verbal and written communication to effectively work with various departments and levels within the company, including the board of directors
  • Able to proactively identify issues
  • Able to work on several projects simultaneously with tight timelines
  • Able to work alone, with minimal oversight, as well as part of a large team of attorneys and staff
