A Better Opportunity

Better is seeking a hard-working, creative, strategic litigator with 3-5 years of experience to work as a litigator and general legal utility player. The right candidate will play a pivotal role on a small but mighty legal team that both oversees outside counsel and directly handles civil and regulatory/enforcement matters.

Your primary focus will be on litigation, where you will conduct legal research, represent the company at various proceedings, and write legal briefs, correspondence, and other court filings. At least 50 percent of time will be supporting the Company’s defenses in various California employment FSLA and PAGA class actions, so interest in employment and/or complex class actions is necessary. There will also be opportunities to directly represent the company in IP disputes and general civil litigation. Additionally, if you have interests in growing outside the litigation area, you will have the opportunity to oversee and advise on various corporate, compliance, licensing, and business-side endeavors.

Responsibilities

    • Provide comprehensive pre-trial, trial, and post-trial support to in-house attorneys and outside counsel across a diverse range of litigation matters, including California employment class actions. Offer legal counsel and advice on a wide range of litigation, corporate and compliance matters to support business objectives.
    • Support in-house senior attorneys and outside counsel on managing large or complex cases; independently manage and run smaller cases, including IP disputes.
    • Draft, review, and file pleadings, motions, and other legal documents accurately and efficiently. Conduct quick and thorough legal research using Westlaw, LexisNexis, and other relevant platforms to support case strategy and decision-making
    • Assist in resolving customer, employee and third-party disputes.
    • Review evidence and law for the purpose of making recommendations to the Company on how to proceed in disputes
    • Maintain oversight of docket tracking and briefing schedules to ensure compliance with court deadlines and appearances.
    • Collaborate with in-house transactional lawyers to ensure compliance with corporate governance requirements, maintain corporate documents, and draft agreement summaries, memos, and related documents.

Qualifications

    • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active NY or CA bar membership required.
    • 3-5 years of experience as a litigation attorney, preferably with prior experience in a corporate legal department or law firm.
    • Strong analytical skills and excellent legal judgment.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively and simply communicate legal concepts to both legal and non-legal stakeholders.
    • Deep familiarity with legal research tools such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, and e-discovery platforms.
    • Independent worker with a growth mindset, who takes initiative but also accepts guidance and knows when to ask for help. Quick learner with an entrepreneurial mindset
    • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under pressure and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
    • Collaborative mindset with a willingness to work closely with cross-functional teams and external partners
