About The Position

The Civil Attorney for Behavioral Health is responsible for representing the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office (MCAO) in hearings on petitions for mental health treatment, reviewing cases involving danger to others, and providing periodic legal training to crisis management workers involved in the civil commitment process.

The Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office serves as a law firm that provides legal representation and advice to the County government, its various elected officials and agencies, as well as the dedicated employees of Maricopa County. We handle matters such as tax appeals by County taxpayers, environmental enforcement cases, public records requests, and we defend legal actions, lawsuits, and claims brought against the County.

We Require

  • Two years of civil practice experience
  • Juris Doctor or Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school
  • Must have a current Arizona Bar license and number and be in good standing with the Arizona Bar Association

Job Contributions

  • Attends hearings in court and communicates effectively
  • Conducts research and analyzes legal issues using both computerized legal research and hard copy tools
  • Performs complex legal work and is responsible for legal matters involving Maricopa County

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in an office and courtroom setting in a high-volume, fast-paced environment with frequent stressful situations, extended periods of sitting while completing paperwork, standing, and moving about while performing duties
  • Valid Arizona driver's license is required upon hire
  • Ability to travel to and from various county locations for court appearances, meetings, and training, utilizing personal or county-owned vehicles
  • Ability to move up to 20 pounds
