Come work at a place where innovation and teamwork come together to support the most exciting missions in the world!

Petco is currently looking for an amazing Privacy Paralegal to work with our Privacy Counsel, our Associate General Counsel of Compliance, and our larger legal team.

Petco is a category-defining health and wellness company focused on improving the lives of pets, pet parents and our own Petco partners. Since our founding, we’ve been trailblazing new standards in pet care, delivering comprehensive wellness solutions through our products and services, and creating communities that deepen the pet-pet parent bond. Over the last three years, we have transformed the business from a successful traditional retailer to a disruptive, fully integrated, digital-focused provider of pet health and wellness offerings. We operate in a large, attractive growth market within an industry that serves more than 69 million households with pets and represents a total addressable market of $95 billion as of 2019.

We operate more than 1,500 Petco locations across the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico, including a growing network of in-store veterinary hospitals, and offer a complete online resource for pet health and wellness at petco.com and on the Petco app. The Petco Foundation, an independent nonprofit organization, has invested more than $280 million since it was created in 1999 to help promote and improve the welfare of companion animals and through in-store adoption events, we’ve helped find homes for more than 6.5 million animals.

Petco provides a multitude of opportunities to learn, develop, and grow as a professional, and the legal team truly embodies our employee-first culture. The Privacy Paralegal role will work on a wide variety of privacy, contracting, regulatory compliance, data governance, legal and administrative matters. Ultimately, the Privacy Paralegal will support the legal team by applying broad project management skills to all privacy-related projects.

As a Privacy Paralegal, you will get to:

  • Support Petco’s Overall Privacy and Compliance Program:
    • The Privacy Paralegal will help track, manage, and organize privacy-related legal notices that Petco provides to guests and partners – on our website, in stores, within our mobile app, and beyond.
    • You will independently gather information needed from other departments to help Privacy Counsel continue growing and documenting Petco’s privacy program. This may include assisting counsel with documenting and updating Petco's website policies, terms and conditions, internal policies, and training materials related to the handling of personal information; maintaining an overall index of privacy program materials; and using a wide array of Company systems to verify that deletion and access requests are handled accurately and timely.
    • You will assist with various projects to support Petco’s compliance with privacy laws, including the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), such as helping to improve internal procedures for processing requests to delete or access information.
  • Support Document Management, Data Retention, Litigation, and CPRA Projects:
    • The Privacy Paralegal may be called on to work with cross-functional teams to help update data retention policies and procedures; assist with Petco’s data inventory maintenance; and help the business understand and operationalize new legal requirements, including the CPRA. You may be responsible for using third-party software and tools to manage and resolve privacy requests.
    • If litigation arises, you may be called on to compile, review, and organize information, materials, documents, reports or evidence for privacy-related litigation matters. You will use Pacer and Westlaw to access court decisions and dockets; retrieve court documents; and report on pending cases.
    • In addition, you will partner closely with legal and compliance team members, and the Information Security team, to support Petco’s Privacy Impact Assessment process, prepare for the CPRA, and support other projects tied to privacy and legal issues at Petco.
  • Oversee the Lifecycle of Privacy Contracts:
    • The Privacy Paralegal will independently interact with counsel, vendors, Petco employees, and business partners to gather information about existing and new vendor relationships. You will partner with counsel to review, process, and finalize privacy-related contract amendments.
    • You will help manage, track, index, and monitor the status of all existing and new contracts involving privacy issues or personal information. You will be creating and maintaining a master index of these agreements, and managing partners and vendors in finalizing and executing privacy-related contracts.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Privacy Paralegal will prepare reports, correspondence and memoranda and other documents to support the legal team as needed. You will conduct routine and specific legal and factual information research and data compilation; assist with internal and external communications related to legal matters; and assist with other projects and duties as assigned. You will maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest developments in privacy law and in other related areas.

Nature of Supervision:

Under the general direction of the Privacy Counsel, the Privacy Paralegal is expected to perform ongoing legal and administrative tasks, with minimal direction and guidance, and collaborate with members of all departments on various projects.
