Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM or as needed.
This position is located in the Virginia Community College System Office providing legal assistance and administrative support to System Counsel and Associate System Counsels. Reviews leases and associated documents and contracts; provides litigation and grievance support for cases when necessary; prepares and proofreads legal memoranda and documents; organizes the office, controls documents, processes mail and handles other clerical duties.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of legal assistance/paralegal support to a law practice working for a government agency or other law practice is required including experience in legal research and title searches. Employee must also demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentiality, work well under pressure, and adjust priorities without close supervision. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products to include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required; working knowledge of Access is preferred. Excellent written communication and verbal communication skills, proficiency in time management, the ability to work independently and as a team member, and the ability to organize and analyze written and verbal information are required.
Competent working knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures is required.
Bachelor’s degree in related field and/or Legal Assistant Certificate is preferred; however, an equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the required qualifications may substitute for educational criteria. Knowledge of and experience in state contract law and purchasing is preferred.
