Calm is growing its content library and gaining more exposure every day. Because of this new growth, the number of contracts is climbing, and the nature of our branded relationships is becoming more complex. Copyright, trademark, and rights of publicity are underlying parts of these contracts, as well as relationships that require Calm content to be distributed on other platforms. Experience with these legal issues is crucial for candidates looking to help grow the legal team into the future.

What You’ll Do:

We are looking for an exceptional attorney who is passionate about product and regulatory counseling and committed to advancing Calm’s mission of making the world a healthier and happier place. As Product and Regulatory Counsel, you will dive into meaningful and mission-critical projects to ensure organizational compliance with domestic and international legal frameworks. You will ensure that Calm practices privacy-by-design and that its data governance framework is robust. You will advise on applicable healthcare regulations and ensure that Calm’s products align with global consumer protection rules. This role will report to the Head of Product and Regulatory Counseling and will work hand-in-hand with cross-functional stakeholders throughout the organization, including members of the product, engineering, security and operations teams.

  • On a daily basis, help surface, scope and drive legal work streams related to ensuring compliance with domestic and international laws.
  • Work cross-functionally to develop and implement privacy-by-design principles.
  • Identify applicable laws and regulations, assess risk to the business, and provide actionable advice to team members throughout the organization.
  • Assist in the review and assessment of new products, features, and uses of data to assess compliance with laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating consumer notices, terms of service, and privacy policies 
  • Partner with customer experience team in actioning consumer rights requests and refining policies and procedures related to rights requests
  • Monitor and anticipate developments in the regulatory landscape
  • Draft and advise on policies, processes, systems, and internal controls necessary to ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements

Who You Are:

  • A licensed attorney
  • At least 10 years of experience as an attorney advising on product and regulatory compliance in some or all of the following areas:
  • Product compliance for global on-line services (US, EU, APAC)
  • Privacy (CCPA, GDPR, FTC)
  • Healthcare (HIPAA)
  • Minors u13s (COPPA)
  • Consumer protection
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Intellectually curious and deeply interested in technology
  • Enjoys helping others and has a can-do attitude
  • Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent at multitasking and managing competing priorities
