Elon Musk’s ambitious brain-computer interface venture, Neuralink, has discreetly secured an additional $43 million in equity. This funding round comes at a crucial time as the company gears up for its first human clinical trials slated for next year.

Neuralink, a brainchild of the visionary entrepreneur, is at the forefront of developing implantable chips that can interpret brain waves. The company’s mission is to create a generalized brain interface that could potentially restore autonomy to individuals with unmet medical needs. The Road to Human Trials

Neuralink has successfully received approval from the reviewing independent institutional review board and its first hospital site to commence recruitment for its inaugural human clinical trial. The trial, aptly named the PRIME Study (an acronym for Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface), aims to evaluate the safety of Neuralink’s implant (N1) and surgical robot (R1). It also seeks to assess the initial functionality of the brain-computer interface (BCI) for enabling people with paralysis to control external devices with their thoughts.

The trial will primarily focus on individuals aged over 22 years old with quadriplegia resulting from cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). These individuals must have a consistent and reliable caregiver. The initial goal of the BCI is to grant these individuals the ability to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts alone.

Rigorous Schedule for First Participants

The study itself will be quite intense, with nine at-home and in-person clinic visits over 18 months, followed by five years of follow-ups. Participants will also have to do a minimum of two weekly brain-computer interface research sessions for one hour. After the initial 18-month study, which comprises nine visits with researchers, the participants will continue with sessions of at least two hours a week involving brain-computer interface research. This will be followed by 20 more visits during the next five years.

This rigorous schedule is designed to ensure that the technology is safe and effective. The long-term nature of the study also allows researchers to monitor any potential side effects or complications that may arise over time. This comprehensive approach to human trials underscores Neuralink’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its trial participants.

The Science Behind Neuralink

Neuralink’s device is equipped with a chip that processes and transmits neural signals from implants in the brain to a unit located behind the ear. From there, the signals are transmitted to devices like computers and phones. The company envisions that a person would potentially be able to control a mouse, keyboard, or other computer functions such as text messaging with their thoughts.

Neuralink also believes its device will eventually be able to restore neural activity inside the body, allowing those with spinal cord injuries to move limbs. The San Francisco and Austin-based firm also aspires to cure neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.
