Stanford Law School Appoints New Dean, Legal Scholar George Triantis

Stanford Law School has announced the appointment of George Triantis as its new dean, effective June 17, 2024. Triantis, the Charles J. Meyers Professor of Law and Business, will succeed Jenny Martinez, who transitioned to the role of Stanford's provost in October 2023.

Triantis, a distinguished member of the Stanford faculty since 2011, is noted for his contributions to the fields of contracts, commercial law, and bankruptcy. His tenure at Stanford also includes a role as senior associate vice provost for research since 2020, focusing on research integrity and policy, international engagements, and risk management.

Provost Martinez expressed confidence in Triantis's leadership, citing his commitment to inclusivity and his collaborative leadership style. Under his deanship, Martinez anticipates that Stanford Law School will continue its tradition of excellence and innovation in both research and teaching, while charting an exciting path forward.

In his scholarship, Triantis is recognized for integrating economic theory with legal practice. He has been at the forefront of applying options theory to contract studies and has extensively explored contract design, bargaining power in negotiations, and the role of U.S. bankruptcy processes in public policy decision-making.

Triantis expressed his honor in taking on the deanship and emphasized the critical role of law and legal institutions in addressing societal challenges. He advocates for a vigorous and open debate on key legal and public policy issues, drawing from a diverse pool of talented individuals.

Jane Schacter, the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law, and former Provost Persis Drell, who co-chaired the search committee for the new dean, both praised Triantis's dedication to the Stanford Law community and his collaborative spirit.

Prior to his tenure at Stanford, Triantis served as the Eli Goldston Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and held academic positions at the law schools of the universities of Chicago, Toronto, and Virginia. He is a member of the American Law Institute and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
