This job contributes to REI’s success by providing legal and compliance services to the co-op on supply chain, product safety and regulatory compliance matters and related commercial litigation, policies, guidelines, and processes, with an approach that balances pragmatism, risk, and compliance. The successful candidate will report to the Deputy General Counsel – Compliance, Risk and Litigation. Models and acts in accordance with REI’s guiding values and mission.

• 
  Be a trusted legal partner to the organization on sensitive and wide-ranging commercial law matters including consumer product safety and compliance, health and safety, and related matters, with expertise in litigation and in providing general commercial advice
• Oversee and manage litigation and threats of litigation with the support of the Legal Specialist and in coordination with outside counsel when necessary
• Oversee, investigate and respond to demand letters and agency complaints (e.g., CPSC, DOT, FDA.)
• Ensure the co-op’s compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws related to commercial operations
• Partner with the business to enhance product safety compliance programs
• Oversee relationship with regulatory authorities, and management of product safety claims and recalls
• Develop policies and drive compliant practices through outreach and trainings on relevant topics (live and online)
• Manage outside counsel
• Act in alignment with and model REI’s core values and mission
• At least 5 years relevant experience advising on commercial law and /or product safety and compliance law; Previous in-house retail strongly preferred
• Experience with Global consumer brands is also strongly preferred
• JD degree from top law school; admitted to a U.S. state bar
• Highly responsive and service-oriented attitude
• Substantial experience with delivering advice and counsel to clients such Operations, Loss Prevention, Risk Management, Product Design and Quality teams
• Experience with conducting and managing product safety issues, including recalls
• Significant experience with the development of policies, process and ability to drive changes in business practices through relationships and influence
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with multiple deadlines
• Ability to maintain strong working relationships with cross-divisional partners
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including demonstrated ability to create useful business documents and presentations in plain English
• Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to learn about and support multiple areas of the business
• Active and effective team player and collaborator with internal business clients and within own department, including excellent people skills and the ability to build and maintain positive, supportive working relationships
• Experience counseling and training business persons with little or no legal background
• Mature judgment and demonstrated ability to work effectively with senior leaders
• Appreciation for and support of REI’s co-op structure, culture, and values
• Ability to think strategically and provide critical analysis and risk assessments
• Champion for the organization and advocate for solutions in the co-op’s overall best interest
