Assistant General Counsel, Compliance

Job Purpose:
We are seeking a reliable and proactive attorney with a minimum of five years of legal experience in one or more of the following areas: regulatory compliance, mortgage lending, or mortgage servicing. Primary responsibilities will include researching, monitoring and reporting regulatory and mortgage industry changes, preparing and updating federal and state regulatory compliance guides, advising the compliance and legal teams on regulatory reporting requirements, and collaborating with other departments to ensure implementation of compliance and legal required changes to business processes and practices. This candidate will report directly to the company’s Senior Mortgage Counsel.
This role will require strong independent judgment and the ability to handle a wide variety of routine matters with little guidance or assistance. The role is ideal for a self-starter who seeks to advance their legal career in an in-house environment. As an ideal candidate, you are reliable, organized, professional, responsible, and possess superlative communication skills and tact.
This is a remote position, though periodic travel (in accordance with CDC guidance) to Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois is expected.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Primary responsibility within the organization for monitoring and reporting on changes in the mortgage industry affecting regulatory compliance
- Preparing memoranda, reports, and presentations relating to legal and compliance changes
- Preparing and submitting various reports to state and federal regulators
- Assisting the legal and compliance teams with compliance and legal research projects
- Collaborating across the organization to properly implement and track compliance-related changes to business practices and processes
- Assist Senior Mortgage Counsel as needed
- Perform special projects as required
- Support department leaders across the company
Qualifications & Desired Skills:
- Two years of continuous and progressive legal experience
- Ability to think and write critically and analytically
- Excellent independent judgment
- 5+ years of collective professional work experience, including experience outside of the legal profession
