Minimum qualifications:

  • J.D. or equivalent degree.
  • 3 years of attorney experience, including government, in-house, or law firm in data privacy, internal investigations or cybersecurity.
  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing or authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status) in the state the position is located.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with any of the following: advising companies on compliance with data privacy laws, regulations, and/or incidents; the legal mechanisms governing the compelled disclosure of user data by US communication service providers such as the Electronic Communications Privacy Act or state equivalents; advising companies on cybersecurity legal issues; and/or conducting internal investigations.
  • Experience as a state or federal prosecutor, or public defender.
  • Experience with public speaking.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

About the job

As an Associate Security Counsel you will work to ensure all data disclosure complies with the law and Google policies, and serve as the central point of contact for product-related incidents involving potential data disclosure or law enforcement involvement. This portfolio is diverse, and includes topics such as requests for user data, internal investigations into criminal misuse of Google’s products, crimes committed against Google, and product assistance with issues such as encryption, wiretapping and information security.

You will oversee Google’s response to requests for user data from public safety and similar agencies from around the world as part of Google’s Law Enforcement and Information Security Program in the legal department. This program provides legal subject matter expertise to ensure that user data is managed in a manner consistent with Google’s principles and policies, and governing legal requirements. The team works closely with the compliance team and others across the Google family, including members of the internal security, engineering, product, and policy teams, as well as others within the legal department.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the legal process and requests for user data from government agencies, and work closely with teams across Google.
  • Establish and enforce policies relating to disclosure requests to help advance our principles.
  • Communicate with government agencies concerning requirements in particular cases.
  • Work on relevant Google privacy initiatives.
  • Support the public policy, legal, and communications team in overseeing data disclosure issues.
