Shipt is growing, and we are searching for a Senior Corporate Counsel - Litigation and Investigations to join our team! We are looking for a highly-motivated attorney with a passion for challenging work that impacts the Company’s rapid growth. The Legal team is a diverse organization inclusive of approachable and good-natured team members who frequently step out of comfort zones to pitch in and get things done, all while managing risk.

Shipt has a wide variety of business partners who will look to you for third-party risk management advice and counsel and pre-litigation and litigation support.  Responsibilities for this role include:

  • Partnering with Legal team members to provide holistic and cross-functional  advice and counsel to Shipt business partners in accordance with Shipt policies and strategies 

  • Actively managing a portfolio of claims and litigation matters, including, but not limited to general liability, commercial liability and worker classification matters (this includes retaining counsel, conducting investigations and discovery, motion practice, witness preparation, and reporting risks and exposures to the business)

  • Leading or supporting a variety of government claims investigations, including, but not limited to administrative audits, agency charges, unemployment and workers’ compensation claims arising out or related to worker classification claims 

  • Partnering with internal stakeholders (e.g., Policy, Government Affairs, Operations, Risk Management) to develop and implement litigation strategies in contemplation of Shipt’s business model, including but not limited to general liability, commercial liability and worker classification strategies

  • Providing advice and direction to stakeholders, including claims management and outside counsel partners, in accordance with Shipt’s claims and litigation strategies

  • Managing outside counsel and, as appropriate, third party claims administrators, including overseeing case staffing and claims management for active claims and cases

COMMUNICATION:

Internal:

  • Influence team members of all levels within the Shipt organization by identifying and analyzing options that mitigate risk while driving business priorities;

  • Tailor message for the audience and provide quick turn advice that facilitates risk-based and informed decisions;

  • Partner with stakeholders of Shipt’s parent company, as applicable.

External:

  • Influence external stakeholders whether Shipt partners or government agencies.

  • J.D. or equivalent from accredited law school and a member in good standing of at least one  state bar

  • Minimum 7 years experience at a law firm or in-house capacity serving technology based corporate clients in complex and high exposure litigation including employment and worker classification matters.

  • Prior experience advising gig economy companies, whether as in-house or outside counsel is required

  • Experience litigating a wide variety of matters is preferred, but prior litigation of  employment matters is required.

  • Experience litigating or otherwise resolving administrative and agency matters

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Strong collaborator with ability to establish effective client relationships

  • Adaptable team player who can be also be successful working independently in a fast-paced environment

  • Demonstrates an ability to strike a sensible and practical balance between legal risks and business goals

  • Respects, appreciates and is curious about differences related to working with others; committed to developing modeling Shipt’s values
