Position Summary

Sony Corporation of America (SCA) has an excellent opportunity for an experienced privacy attorney.  Reporting into the SCA Legal Department, this role has responsibilities at both the operating company level and the global level, with a primary focus on supporting SCA’s corporate functions (e.g., marketing, HR, and Sony’s Global Information Security Department) as well as certain SCA subsidiaries such as Sony Music Publishing, Sony DADC, and Sony Biotechnology. A successful candidate must be able to work independently, manage complexity, and collaborate with business stakeholders as well as legal, privacy, and information security colleagues around the world. This role will be on site in our NYC office.

Responsibilities – Operating Company

  • Provide privacy legal advice (both global and U.S.) and work with the SCA Privacy Officer to implement privacy policies and processes for SCA and certain of its subsidiaries.  This includes:
    • Counseling stakeholders at multiple locations on privacy compliance
    • Providing privacy input on business projects and initiatives, including working closely with privacy contacts at other Sony operating companies on cross-company initiatives
    • Advising on customer, vendor, and employee privacy issues
    • Drafting and negotiating data protection riders, including implementation of the new Standard Contractual Clauses
    • Managing privacy legal compliance efforts, including drafting data transfer agreements, data protection notices, website privacy policies, and related procedures
    • Conducting and reviewing Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs)
    • Providing briefings and training, as necessary
  • Support U.S. state privacy law compliance activities
  • Assist in data breach response (including evaluating notification requirements)
  • Keep current on privacy legal and regulatory developments and brief senior business leaders on relevant changes

Responsibilities – Global

  • Provide privacy legal advice and training to Sony Group Corporation’s Global Information Security Department   
  • Evaluate privacy legal issues associated with proposed information security monitoring tools and configurations
  • Provide input on proposed global information security and privacy policies, standards, and other requirements
  • Work with the Sony Group Corporation Privacy Section to support cross-company global projects involving personal information

Qualifications

  • A J.D. degree and membership in good standing in the New York bar. (Non-New York attorneys would be required to register as an in-house counsel with the State Bar of New York.)
  • Minimum of 8 years of related legal experience in a top law firm or corporate environment
  • In-house experience in a multinational corporation preferred
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of privacy law, including U.S. privacy law, European data protection law, data transfer law, privacy laws as they relate to cybersecurity, and the use of monitoring tools
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent judgment and analytical skills
  • Ability to assess risk strategically and help clients find solutions that enable them to mitigate risk while achieving their goals
  • Program/project management skills, including the ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects
  • The strong leadership and interpersonal skills necessary to build relationships and achieve results within SCA and across the Sony Group
  • Must be eligible to work unrestricted in the U.S.
