The Role:
The New York Times Company is seeking a highly motivated and experienced leading attorney who will own responsibility across the company for all legal aspects of data privacy, information security, consumer-facing guidance and related compliance efforts. This role will work closely with senior executives and operational leads throughout the company to include the areas of marketing operations, subscription growth, product, engineering, technology, data governance, information security, commercial contracts, apps and ad-tech and many more. This role will report to the Vice President and Assistant General Counsel responsible for The Time’s commercial business and legal affairs function.
What You’ll Do:
Advise all internal clients on the development, collection, use, transfer and governance of data. This will include data analytics, privacy and security (both from a U.S. and an international perspective) (GDPR, CCPA, CPRA, COPPA, etc.)
Draft and/or enhance privacy program-related policies and standards; conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments and other risk assessment activity as needed
Oversee uses of data for growth marketing and advanced advertising to ensure compliance with privacy and consumer protection laws
Advise internal clients on consumer-facing laws, regulations and best practices
Manage, draft and update privacy policies, terms of use, terms of sale and legal notices across all properties and platforms
Partner with key business stakeholders on the company’s marketing, data governance and information security compliance efforts
Review, draft and negotiate data protection agreements and security exhibits and work closely with the appropriate teams to advise on third party risk reviews; Handle the full commercial contracting cycle for heavily personal data-focused deals
Provide legal advice in connection with product and platform developments and releases including in relation to developments by major technology platforms
Track and counsel clients on legal developments in areas of data privacy and security and consumer marketing and subscription compliance and guiding business teams through application of and implications of such developments
Conduct and/or advise on internal and external audits related to areas of coverage. Conduct comprehensive business risk assessments to identify potential areas of vulnerability and risk; develop/implement risk mitigation and corrective action plans where needed
Serve as legal lead for all security incidents, working closely with the company’s CISO and other key stakeholders; Providing guidance to information security initiatives and policies
Responsible for company-wide training strategy and execution for areas of coverage
What You’ll Bring:
Juris Doctor is required and must be a member of the New York Bar
10 years relevant experience in the areas of data privacy and protection, negotiating data privacy related agreements and understanding of the interplay between technology and data privacy
3+ years experience managing people with proven experience effectively managing cross-functional relationships and competing priorities
Experience advising or managing legal professionals who advise on a wide variety of consumer-related issues both domestic and international, including payflow, subscription offerings, marketing copy, ARL, anti-spam, TCPA, TSR, UDAP, customer care, cancellation, credit card notice requirements, etc.
Previous in-house experience preferred
Ability to contribute to discussions of general business issues and work well with a wide range of clients
Ability to analyze complex legal and regulatory material and communicate any implications in a clear manner
Ability to understand and counsel clients in a manner consistent with the Company’s goals and culture
