What you’ll be doing...

The Compliance Counsel—Global Trade Compliance is responsible for supporting the Verizon Compliance program, focusing on export and import controls and sanctions compliance.

The position is for an experienced lawyer with expertise in export laws, including International Traffic in Arms Regulations, Export Administration Regulations, Executive Orders regarding trade compliance, and U.S. sanctions laws. The Compliance Counsel—Global Trade Compliance will partner closely with Verizon’s Import Export Compliance Team, International Logistics Services Team, the Supplier Risk Office, and Supply Chain. The position will work with these teams and other Verizon lawyers to provide legal advice to and improve internal controls within Verizon’s lines of business and administrative functions.

The position reports to the Managing Associate General Counsel – Compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess and prioritize current and emerging risks, their potential impact on Verizon, and develop and implement appropriate controls
  • Advise on trade compliance laws and monitor changes in the law, including those addressing the provision of goods and software to China and Russia
  • Work with partners to monitor and enhance appropriate export, import and customs controls regarding Verizon’s global supply chain and global sales portfolio
  • Monitor and enhance controls for reviewing customers and vendors to ensure compliance with sanctions laws
  • Prepare or review licenses and other filings necessary to comply with export and sanctions laws
  • Review and manage contractual language relating to export and sanctions law
  • Monitor and provide legal advice regarding Verizon’s international travel policy
  • Manage trade related investigations, enforcement actions or audits
  • Perform due diligence and provide advice regarding trade compliance issues for potential M&A activity
  • Partner with information technology and information security teams to ensure data and data systems comply with relevant export laws
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to other attorneys and business leaders
  • Support other compliance and risk management teams
  • Prepare training regarding export, import, customs and sanctions compliance
  • Execute and balance both time-sensitive and longer-term projects, driving them to completion

This hybrid role will have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days as set by the manager.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • JD and six or more years of relevant experience.
  • Bar membership in good standing, and needed licenses.
  • Experience working on trade regulation issues.
  • Experience driving complex projects to a successful, timely completion.
  • Willingness to travel.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • Experience before relevant agencies, such as OFAC, State Department and Commerce Department on sanctions and export issues.
  • Experience reviewing and improving controls to mitigate risk.
  • Experience working on trade regulation issues at a company.
  • Experience counseling business executives.
  • Excellent organizational, project management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A highly analytical mind, with the ability to synthesize information and produce clear, crisp summaries, visualizations and documentation.
  • Solid leadership and partnership skills.
  • The ability to work independently.
  • Experience managing others.
  • Presentation and public speaking skills.
