General Counsel
Anthropic is looking for a General Counsel to join our team. As GC of a small but rapidly growing AI research and development company, you will be responsible for all elements of our legal processes and strategy. This will include managing tasks large and small, from helping operational partners with ins and outs of daily legal business matters to reviewing major contracts, as well as working with management on a range of special projects. As our first dedicated legal hire, you will act as a trusted partner and advisor to our senior leadership team.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Liaising with and managing external legal partners on specialized topics, ranging from immigration to IP.
- Designing, drafting and reviewing company-critical contracts on topics ranging from office leases to cloud computing deals.
- Partnering with human resources on employee-related legal topics from helping to compliantly track leave to helping to make employee legal resources accessible and clear.
- Supporting officers and directors of the company with board-related duties.
- Developing our legal strategy as we scale, and building out practical processes in concert with senior management and operations.
- Working with our technical teams on topics related to training data and privacy, cloud compute procurement, and the intersection of these with potential users if we deploy our systems.
- Partnering with senior leadership on a number of special projects, including helping to design a novel governance structure, and working with our policy team to propose possible industry-wide safety standards and legislation.
- Acting as a trusted resource and advisor to the senior leadership of the company.

Requirements:
- Minimum 8 years of practicing legal experience. Additional experience is highly welcome, and salary will be commensurate with experience.
- Fluency with California and Delaware laws and regulations, and admitted to the state bar of at least one jurisdiction and in good standing.
- More than one area of legal expertise, and a proven track record of picking up work in new areas.
- Experience working with technology companies; in-house experience not required, but strongly preferred. This role can be expanded to include additional responsibilities based on an applicant’s interests, background and seniority.
