JOB SUMMARY:

The candidate for the Patent Agent, Intellectual Property position will be responsible for a wide array of duties related to creating and managing BioCryst’s patent portfolio. Candidates will have a strong background in the life sciences and passion drug development & will directly interact with BioCryst’s research and development staff.  As a member of the best-in-class legal team, this position will have a direct impact on the mission of the department and the overall organization. #LI-Remote

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Advise and manage the preparation of filing and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications
  • Participate in the strategic development of BioCryst patent portfolios and formulate patent strategies and pharmaceutical lifecycle management
  • Manage the collection and filing of invention assignments, declarations, assignments and information disclosure statements
  • Assist in the preparation of patentability, freedom-to-operate, infringement and validity investigations relating to BioCryst compounds
  • Assist with preparation of regulatory submission relating to BioCryst compounds
  • Collaborate with internal legal team and outside counsel on intellectual property issues
  • Oversee docket management and manage external IP collaboration
  • Review abstracts, posters and publications prepared by the Company’s research and development teams prior to submission
  • Monitor and analyze competitive intellectual property in key commercial areas
  • Proactively provide IP advice and perspective to key internal decision-makers
  • All other duties as assigned

 

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field required. Masters degree or Ph.D. highly preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Preferred experience and educational background in medicinal chemistry
  • Registration to practice before the USPTO
  • Must enjoy working with others in a collaborative environment
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a patent agent or scientific advisor/technology specialist in a law firm or law department
  • Must have excellent patent prosecution and claim drafting skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of USPTO and WIPO rules and procedures
  • Willingness and commitment to keep abreast of changes in PTO rules and procedures
  • Strong computer skills, preferably high-level proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel
