Microsoft’s Latin America Corporate External and Legal Affairs department (CELA) has an immediate opening for an experienced attorney to join its LatAm Compliance team. The attorney will assist in Microsoft’s continuing commitment to comply with laws, regulations and policies governing its business, finance, and accounting activities across Latin America and the Caribbean.  As part of CELA’s Customer & Partner Solutions (CPS) organization, the attorney will oversee and conduct internal investigations and provide legal advice and guidance on compliance issues and programs to various Microsoft entities and employees in the LatAm region, including the regional headquarters and subsidiaries.  Responsibilities also include serving as an advisor to various compliance committees, providing counseling and training to Microsoft employees, and working with internal stakeholders as well as external partners to identify and mitigate compliance risk. Some travel is required to complete certain investigations and engage with business clients, colleagues, and partners.

The location for this role is Fort Lauderdale/Miami.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and conduct sensitive internal investigations, including developing the plan of investigation, conducting subject and witness interviews, analyzing evidence, drafting investigation memoranda, identifying remediation opportunities, and preparing various reports for senior stakeholders in conjunction with our partners in the CELA Compliance & Ethics organization.
  • Work with business leadership, compliance committees and multi-disciplinary teams including in CELA, HR, Finance, Controls & Compliance, and other stakeholders to identify and analyze compliance and related legal risks, provide advice, resolve issues, and implement overall business strategy.
  • Contribute to building and improving the culture of compliance, ethics and integrity in Microsoft Latin America, including through developing and driving compliance messaging, training and other compliance initiatives.
  • Navigate and advise on compliance regulatory issues in the region.
  • Advise employees on Microsoft policy questions and issues.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate Degree or Equivalent International Degree OR Completion of a Legal Apprenticeship.
  • Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction.
  • 3+ years experience as a practicing attorney OR equivalent practice of law.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience as an attorney in government agency, international law firm, or in-house legal department, preferably in compliance and/or internal investigations.
  • In-house counsel experience
  • Strong commitment to and reputation for integrity, ability to exercise independent judgment and decision-making.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, communication, and interviewing skills.
  • Strong writing ability in English and Spanish and/or Portuguese.
  • A firm understanding of relevant laws and regulations applicable to U.S. companies, including the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), as well as an appreciation of pertinent accounting and finance principles.
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently, prioritize workflow and adjust to frequent workload fluctuations.
  • Ability to apply sound, principled, and consistent judgment.
  • Prior experience working across diverse cultures and managing and building strong client relationships.
  • Experience in working with diverse cultures.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
