Sony AI is seeking highly motivated, self-driven individuals with expertise in areas of law relevant to AI, particularly data privacy and copyright. Sony has many real-world AI applications in entertainment and electronics, and we are looking for smart, enthusiastic people who want to contribute to developing fair, transparent, and accountable technology.

Working Location

United States (location flexible) or Japan (Tokyo)

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Advise on AI legal and policy matters, such as data privacy law and copyright law.
  • Conduct legal and policy research on topics such as data governance and AI regulation.
  • Contribute to the development of internal guidelines around AI ethics best practices.
  • Track regulatory developments relevant to AI.
  • Collaborate with Government Affairs teams to draft comments on regulatory proposals.
  • Work closely with a team of AI researchers and programmers in the US, Switzerland and Japan on ambitious AI ethics projects.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Qualified lawyer in the US, EU, or Japan.
  • 5+ years of data privacy and compliance experience.
  • Deep knowledge of data privacy. Expertise in global and European data protection laws and practices and an in-depth understanding of the GDPR.
  • Capable of conducting data privacy compliance reviews and audits.
  • Expertise in applying legal frameworks to data and AI. 
  • Expertise and prior experience in copyright law preferred.
  • Experience working with different stakeholders, such as engineering, legal, and compliance units.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills, including the ability to articulate complex concepts to both expert and non-expert audiences.

Other Required Knowledge

  • The ability to deliver on tight deadlines and adapt to evolving or changing requirements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, and willingness in learning Japanese (if working in Japan).
