Legal and Compliance is responsible for managing all legal and regulatory matters, including contracts, corporate governance, general compliance, academic compliance, employment law matters, intellectual property, product counseling, government relations, and claims. The team includes dedicated teams that support every aspect of Coursera's platform, including university, enterprise and industry partnerships.

As Product Counsel, you will have a broad range of responsibilities providing legal guidance throughout the product life-cycle. You will join a dynamic team that  works across our different business verticals (Consumer, Degrees  and Enterprise) and global geographies. You will be partnering with our product and engineering teams to provide holistic support as they develop and launch new products and features, run experiments and other initiatives. Product Counsel is  also expected to be  at the forefront of legal developments, including in relation to  emerging technologies such as Generative AI.

The successful candidate will have experience resolving some of the legal issues we face daily such as consumer protection, payments, marketing, privacy, intellectual property and a desire to learn the rest. As we never know exactly what lies ahead, the ability to issue-spot in novel and unfamiliar situations will be key to succeeding in this role.  Drafting and negotiation skills are also key in being able to comprehensively support our business partners with all of their needs.

This role will engage with all levels of employees and management, so interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) are vital to strong working relationships. 

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the first point of contact for the product, design, engineering and marketing teams, providing legal advice  throughout the product life-cycle.
  • Advise on privacy issues regarding the use and flow of personal data  in our products and across our platform.
  • Prepare disclosures, terms of use, and other public facing documents for our learners and customers.
  • Identify and involve subject matter experts when faced with issues outside of their own core competencies and knowledge.
  • Centralize knowledge and create scalable processes, policies and procedures that maximize impact of legal guidance and minimize risk to the business.
  • Stay up to date on relevant laws and conduct legal research related to emerging technologies (such as generative AI)  and trends relating to Coursera’s products and services around the world and provide guidance and recommendations to the product team on potential legal implications.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the California bar or ability to be registered as in-house counsel in California.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience at a law firm or in-house legal department or both.
  • Experience with commercial contract law and negotiation.
  • Fluent in English, and have overall a high level of written and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior in-house experience at a technology company with a product serving users across at least two of the following verticals across multiple international jurisdictions: consumer, enterprise, and education.
  • Demonstrated experience counseling cross-functional teams regarding at least two of the following areas: marketing,  consumer protection (e.g. FTC Section 5), payments (e.g. ROSCA, state automatic renewal laws), SaaS and intellectual property.
  • Possess a strong ability to spot issues and potential issues in novel scenarios, have a practical approach to problem-solving and be able to counsel internal clients with clear, concise and creative advice on timelines to meet business needs.
  • In-depth knowledge of US and EU consumer privacy statutes (such as GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, CAN-SPAM)
  • Operate autonomously while being a team player who brings a positive, “can do” attitude to the workplace and works collaboratively with other members of the Legal and Compliance team and with internal clients
  • Thrives in an ever-changing, start-up environment, and works quickly under time-pressure deadlines.

Compensation
Our job titles may span more than one career level. The starting base pay for this role is between $152,000 and $237,000 for all US candidates. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, and benefits.
