Grove Collaborative has an opportunity for an Associate General Counsel, Product to join its legal team to develop and lead the legal support for the product and marketing activities of this newly publicly traded company, impacting the journey to a best-in-class organization that aligns with our mission and values.  
 
As a critical member of the legal and business teams, you will advise and work with a diverse group of product managers, engineers, designers, marketing professionals, retail, consumer product specialists and business leaders who develop, launch, and improve Grove Collaborative’s e-commerce platforms; design and publish brand, marketing and advertising initiatives for the consumer packaged goods (CPG) sold by Grove Collaborative; and structure and negotiate retail opportunities with distribution partners to bring innovative, sustainable product options to consumers.  You will ensure the company’s compliance with relevant advertising, consumer protection, privacy and intellectual property laws (among others) with a view to supporting the company’s innovative efforts and improving the customer experience. 

FOCUS AREAS

  • Although your responsibilities will vary day to day and you are expected to wear many different hats in this role, the successful candidate is someone that is comfortable and motivated by a fast-paced, innovative and technology centered environment where you can leverage demonstrated expertise in the following focus areas on a regular basis:
  • Advising growing direct to consumer (DTC) e-commerce based businesses, CPG businesses, or both. 
  • Leading the legal team's review and oversight of marketing and advertising initiatives across all channels.
  • Identifying and resolving wide-ranging legal issues, including consumer protection, privacy, data security, transactional and commercial law, litigation risk, intellectual property, regulatory, licensing, and antitrust, working directly with business clients to provide on-the-ground support.
  • Reviewing products (both digital and physical), features, marketing copy, and initiatives to assess legal compliance with applicable U.S. laws and regulations, from the early stages of product development through launch.
  • Work closely with various teams and company leadership to provide strategic and proactive legal advice on regulatory matters, contractual terms, policy strategies and product designs affecting Grove Collaborative’s products and services.
  • Drafting terms and conditions, legal disclaimers, and other policies governing the sale and distribution of Grove Collaborative's products and services.
  • Creating and implementing policies and practices to ensure consistent implementation of legal guidance and alignment on risks.
  • Staying on top of the latest developments in laws, regulations, and industry standards applicable to the consumer product industry, including but not limited to, privacy, regulatory consumer product compliance and safety, advertisements and promotions, consumer protection, intellectual property, and supply chain compliance. 
  • Tackling uncharted problems and working with business partners to meet the needs of our fast-paced and innovative business teams.

ABOUT YOU

  • Juris Doctorate and license to practice law in at least one state.
  • At least 6 years of combined experience in law firms, governmental agencies (FTC or state attorneys general a plus), and/or in-house legal departments with at least 2 years of those years focused in-house as primary legal counsel for a retail, e-commerce, or CPG business. 
  • Experience counseling on product development through the entire product lifecycle, and/or experience working closely with product management teams, marketing and engineering.
  • Excellent communication skills and a team-oriented approach with the ability to build strong and lasting relationships with business partners, customers and management.
  • Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously, with effective resolution of conflicting priorities.
  • Resilient and comfortable with coaching a start-up executive team who is transitioning to public company practices.
  • Confident and comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment and can perform with autonomy in a quickly scaling organization
  • History of driving efficient and strategic use of resources, including technical groups, in-house counsel, vendors, and outside counsel.
  • You are familiar with the range of applicable laws and regulations that impact all facets of business policy and operations applicable to a DTC and CPG business.  This position reports to our general counsel and is fully remote, supporting a team based primarily in the San Francisco area.

  • This full-time, exempt position is remote. The budgeted base salary range is $210,000 - $250,000. This pay range is based upon the national average and may vary depending on geographical work location.
