Alto is seeking a talented Senior Employment Counsel with deep experience handling a range of labor and employment related matters to join our dynamic and innovative Legal team. As the team’s first employment counsel, you will manage all labor-related legal matters, including advising on policy and procedures, wage and hour and classification matters, employee relations and employment litigation. You will also advise and assist with policies relating to employee benefits, safety and procedure. Candidates should have a strong attention to detail, be driven to action, have strong business acumen, possess superior analytical and writing skills, and be enthusiastic about Alto’s mission. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to operate in a fast-paced environment, and a sense of humor are essential.
Accelerate Your Career as You
- Act as trusted advisor to Alto leadership, Alto’s HR team and other business stakeholders.
- Provide critical legal and strategic advice on a wide range of complex issues involving Alto employees, workers, and independent contractors, including but not limited to:
- Hiring, contingent worker relationships, employee relations, leaves of absence and accommodations, discrimination and harassment laws, wage and hour, internal investigations, compensation/benefits and termination issues.
- Strategically resolve employment and compliance-related litigation, claims, investigations, subpoenas, demands.
- Provide local, state and multistate employment law strategies and guidance to address business challenges and create organizational alignment.
- Managing government agency investigations, creating proactive training, and preparing self-service tools and guidance materials.
- Provide innovative, creative, strategic, and proactive legal advice to internal business groups.
- Work cross-functionally to support the business’ growth and drive the business workforce goals and priorities.
A Bit About You
Minimum Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in private practice (at employment law-focused law firm) and in-house role.
- Law degree from an accredited institution and active membership in good standing in at least one state bar.

- Superior analytical and legal skills, mature judgment, innovative thinking and a desire to take the initiative, and deliver creative solutions.
- Ability to translate complex legal issues and ambiguity into clear and simple advice and to communicate effectively with non-legal internal colleagues.
- Experience working with government agencies and managing correspondence/inquiries.
- Highly collaborative teammate, and ability to build deep relationships across teams and functions.
- Excellent business judgment, communication and interpersonal skills to inspire and influence employees at every level.
- Demonstrated ability to make decisions and influence, persuade, and build consensus.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with bias for action and self-motivation.
- Integrity and ethics in business and personal conduct.
Additional Physical Job Requirements
- Read English, comprehend, and follow simple oral and written instructions. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
- Communicating with others to exchange information. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sound.
- Frequent repeating motions required to operate a computer that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
- Sedentary work: Sitting most of the time, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Walking & standing are required occasionally.
Salary and Benefits
Salary Range: $187,000.00 - $220,000.00

Travel: Yes - Required up to 25% of the time
