Job Summary and Qualifications
The Legal Operations Director will assist with various elements of process improvement, metrics and analytics, and general administration and operations of the Legal Department. This role will have accountability for both doing and managing assigned projects and tasks. This position will ensure operation objectives and results are in accordance with overall department needs. Responsible for the oversight of department leaders in establishing a measure of performance, increase productivity, and quality improvement. Works in direct partnership with the Associate General Counsel to help execute HCA Healthcare’s legal strategic roadmap and drive continuous improvement. May work directly with CLO/AGC in managing operational components across all legal groups.
What you will do:
Information Technology:
- Manages relationships with providers of legal technology systems and tools.
- Partner with IT and Procurement to enhance existing technology systems and tools, and to assess and implement new technology systems and tools (including cloud-based systems and tools), to support the Legal Department’s most efficient, productive, and collaborative operations – both internally and with external legal service providers.
- Partner with IT on department technology roadmap.
Knowledge Management
- Supervise and/or manage various projects and initiatives relating to the Legal Department’s guiding principles and objectives.
- Supervise the development and maintenance of a legal self-service portal, focused on the transparency and availability of legal practice and operations information.
- Update and maintain contact and subject-matter expert lists for internal corporate resources and external legal services providers.
- Assist in aggregating and organizing relevant legal collateral and related materials from Legal Department members and external legal service providers.
- Revise, implement and manage the Legal Department’s continuing legal education (CLE) and training program.
- Track and manage CLE requirements and professional association memberships.
- Champions and assists in in the execution Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.
Process Improvement
- Analyze existing processes for legal matter management, including allocation of matters to internal and external resources, and tracking and following-up through matter life cycle.
- Assists in addressing cross-departmental integration.
- Work with Legal Department personnel to develop process improvements that promote cost reductions and other efficiencies.
Metrics and Analytics
- Serves as legal department interface with finance to assist with budget forecasting.
- Develop and oversee Legal Department operational dashboard of various indicators to facilitate resource allocation and other management decisions.
- Develop and oversee Key Performance Indicators for monitoring and reporting of Legal Department performance.
- Negotiates Department wide rates and leverages scale with law firms and other vendors.
Administration and Operations
- Ensures the consistent and effective execution of key legal systems and processes that make effective use of organizational resources.
- Coordinate department meetings and annual Legal Summit, including scheduling, technical support, communications, and meeting materials, and prepare and implement surveys and after-action reports.
- Assist General Counsel with recommendations to maximize resources and performance.
- Builds strategic alliances and partnerships within the organization to collaboratively execute business strategies.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's required, JD preferred.
- 7+ years of experience in business operations/analytics required
- 4+ years of experience in relevant administrative/operational role at a large, national law firm or with an in-house corporate legal department required
- Occasional travel may be required
