In HPE's Office of Legal and Administrative Affairs, we are leading the way for in-house legal departments through our client-first orientation, unique approach to talent development, innovative use of tools and technology, and commitment to pro bono work.  The Ethics & Compliance Office, within the Office of Legal and Administrative Affairs, develops and implements HPE’s industry-leading ethics and compliance practices that uphold our values of trust, integrity and respect.  The Anti-Corruption & Global Trade team within the Ethics & Compliance Office partners with HPE’s Global Trade Organization to oversee global trade compliance throughout the company’s operations around the world.

The opening is for an intermediate to expert level lawyer to handle all global trade legal matters.  HPE complies with global trade laws and regulations in the U.S., E.U., Singapore, and other jurisdictions globally, including high-risk markets where there are sanctioned parties, and sells solutions that may include controlled or dual use technologies. 

The lawyer in this position will serve as a legal advisor to assigned internal clients (including the Global Trade Organization) and other company attorneys and provide legal support for HPE’s global trade compliance program.  The lawyer will work with others in developing and implementing compliance solutions, assisting in global trade-related investigations, and advising on licensing and customs requirements.

We have a hybrid work environment; the successful candidate will be expected to be present in the D.C., Houston, or King of Prussia office several times a week.     

Responsibilities:

  • Provides legal advice concerning global trade compliance matters, including export controls, sanctions, export licensing, product diversion, deemed exports, anti-boycott laws, embargos, product classifications, global trade contract provisions, and customs matters, in support of global operations
  • Manages outside counsel when engaged on global trade matters
  • Develops strategies to address shifts in trade compliance risk, including changes in trade policy across jurisdictions where HPE operates
  • Conducts Global Trade due diligence in mergers & acquisitions
  • Manages legal solutions for clients using specialized legal knowledge of global trade laws and regulations, in the United States, European Union, Singapore, and other jurisdictions in which HPE operates
  • Develops new ideas and methods to effectively address legal issues and compliance risk
  • Identifies and resolves highly complex legal issues requiring in-depth consideration of multiple factors and specialized knowledge and judgment
  • Contributes to complex multidimensional projects or transactions
  • Coordinates with other HPE global functions and business units on global trade policy and advocacy matters
  • Identifies legal risk and recommends solutions that help address the compliance objectives
  • Balances the business interests of client groups with the ultimate fiduciary responsibility to HPE
  • Represents the company in interactions with partners, suppliers, customers other companies, industry organizations and other regulatory bodies as needed 
  • Availability to speak with colleagues in international time zones is required

 

Education and Experience Required:

  • Advanced university degree in law (e.g. JD or LLB).
  • Licensed to practice law in the United States and a current member of the bar in any state or the District of Columbia in good standing

Preferred Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Preferred 8+ years’ legal experience at a law firm, in house, or government agency
  • Experience with global trade legal requirements at an international technology company preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to provide legal advice and address legal matters, usually with multijurisdictional issues
  • Strong legal communication skills (written, verbal, active listening)
  • Demonstrated effective collaboration with others
  • Significant experience managing multiple complex strategic projects
  • Ability to learn quickly about the organization and processes and use that understanding to plan and implement specialized assignments
  • Ability to network effectively across the organization and with people in a variety of job roles to share subject matter expertise
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and independent decision-making
  • Strong organizational skills and time management skills
  • Ability to harness conflict creatively as an opportunity to better understand and/or improve a situation or relationship, and effectively resolve outstanding issues
  • A self-starter, who actively seeks out opportunities to improve business and operational processes/procedures with innovative ideas and creative solutions
  • Ability to approach problems in a rational manner using sound strategies that ensure comprehensive understanding and effective resolution

States with Pay Range Requirement

The expected salary/wage range for a U.S.-based hire filling this position is provided below. Actual offer may vary from this range based upon geographic location, work experience, education/training, and/or skill level. If this is a sales role, then the listed salary range reflects combined base salary and target-level sales compensation pay. If this is a non-sales role, then the listed salary range reflects base salary only. Variable incentives may also be offered. Annual Salary: $138,300.00 - $318,400.00
