Position Summary

Provides legal advice and guidance on Bechtel’s insured litigation and claims and the insurance coverage for such litigation and claims.  The legal work is typically complex, involving multiple parties, outside counsel, and insurers.  Issues are often unique and require original and creative legal solutions.  Ability to maintain and to manage good working relationships with GBU and project personnel, outside counsel, brokers, and insurer representatives is very important.

Responsibilities

  • Manages insured litigation and claims.
  • Directs work of outside local defending company in insured litigation and claims.
  • Develops and implements legal strategy for insured litigation and claims.
  • Works with company personnel and counsel to gather facts and respond to requests for documents and information necessary for defense of insured litigation and claims.
  • Supervises work of legal assistants and information resources specialists.
  • Interviews and evaluates potential witnesses.
  • Assists in selection and preparation of expert witnesses.
  • Evaluates and assists outside counsel in preparation of cases for settlement and trial.
  • Analyzes lawsuits and claims for insurance coverage.
  • Provides legal advice and guidance on insurance coverage.
  • Provides insurance training to project management.
  • Consults with risk managers, business development personnel and Global Business Units on appropriate policies and policy wording for bids and new projects.
  • Consults with legal and risk managers on contract wording pertaining to insurance, indemnity, claims and dispute resolution.
  • Analyzes claims portfolios to identify trends, mitigate risk, and minimize exposure.
  • Designs and implements claims processes for active projects. Advises projects on claim prevention or mitigation strategies.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with key insurers and brokers.
  • Conducts legal research.

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications:

  • JD degree with excellent academic credentials.
  • Federal or State Court clerkship desired.
  • Active State Bar membership.
  • At least 8 years litigation experience, preferably with a major law firm.
  • Experience managing document collection and reviews in large, complex matters using electronic document and case management systems, including close collaboration with litigation support personnel, and oversight of electronic discovery vendors.
  • Trial, deposition, and witness preparation experience required.
  • Knowledge of insurance coverage and experience evaluating insurance coverage preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Superior interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Interest in other countries, cultures, and global business issues.
