Reporting to the SVP, Chief Governance Counsel and Secretary, the ESG Counsel is responsible to provide legal advice and counseling relating to Alcoa’s ESG initiatives and activities in close collaboration with our Global Corporate and Operations teams. This position will be part of the Legal organization, as well as supporting the Sustainability lead-team to assist with developing and implementing ESG strategy and standards at Alcoa.

While Pittsburgh is a preferred location for this role, we are open to candidates based in other U.S. locations.

Key Activities & Skills

  • Serve as a thought leader and in-house expert on all aspects of ESG disclosure, governance, and best practices, including legal, regulatory, and market developments and trends.
  • Monitor and advise on ESG developments, trends, risk mitigation initiatives, and best practices.
  • Execute legal review of all ESG reporting, including ESG-related disclosures, with responsibility for ESG disclosure framework.
  • Support special corporate governance projects as the need arises and other tasks, strategic projects, or duties as needed.
  • Provide strategic, practical legal advice regarding ESG issues, including on existing and emerging ESG requirements and regulations.
  • Legal advisor to Commercial, Controllership, Investor Relations, and External Affairs groups on ESG statements.
  • Analyze potential impacts to the businesses and mitigation activities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experienced in working for global and public company, preferably from mining, heavy or energy intensive industries.
  • Law degree from an accredited college or university, and licensed to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of 7 years of legal experience, within an in-house legal department an/or a law firm, including with environment, litigation, and/or compliance matters.
  • Strategic thinker who can connect legal challenges to the business and develop smart, insight-driven strategies.
  • Comprehensive understanding of regulatory programs relating to sustainability, reporting frameworks, such as: TCFD (US), SEC climate disclosure requirements (US), CSRD (Europe).
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate and collaborate across functions, businesses, and disciplines.
  • Ability to negotiate, organize, plan, problem-solve and partner with leadership to achieve desired objectives.
  • Ability to manage several complex projects simultaneously while maintaining deadlines and strategic goals.
