Senior Attorney – Global Employment Relations

You will assess legal risks related to an array of employment and HR issues while applying good legal and business judgment to provide nuanced advice and guidance across geographies, cultures, and functions. In this role, you will use your extensive knowledge of applicable local and global employment law and Red Hat’s policies and procedures to review and advise on employee relations matters and partner with our global HR team on Red Hat’s policies, practices, strategy and philosophy for addressing sensitive workplace issues, projects and cases. You will also have the opportunity to work on employment-related litigation and advise on investigations led by the Global People Relations (GPR) team on a global scale.  

 

As a Global Employment Attorney/Counsel, you will interact directly with business unit leaders and executives. This role requires a candidate with experience advising on sensitive matters with a demonstrated ability to apply legal considerations in a practical, business-focused manner. You will need good business judgment, a passion for working collaboratively with others and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced, changing technology and business landscape. To succeed in this role, you will need to be capable of managing multiple complex matters at the same time and providing nuanced advice and guidance to an organization which maintains its entrepreneurial and rapidly expanding organization across geographies, cultures, time zones, and functions. 

What you will do

  • Provide advice and counsel on a range of employment and human resources legal matters and regulatory compliance matters that arise in all global regions where Red Hat conducts business.  This role will focus on the U.S. and Canada, but will also advise on matters in Red Hat’s other regions (EMEA, APAC, and LATAM) as needed.
  • Be the main point of contact in the team for employment matters, including employment litigation, for the U.S. and Canada.
  • Devise strategy for and manage employment-related pre-litigation matters in all global regions (with a primary focus on the U.S. and Canada), and partner with local counsel, when necessary, to ensure that Red Hat’s interests are adequately protected.
  • Work with Red Hat’s Director of Litigation and the litigation team to devise strategy for and manage employment-related litigation matters in all global regions (with a primary focus on the U.S. and Canada).
  • Partner with the HR Team, other teams within the legal department such as the compliance and litigation teams, to handle employment law matters consistently with local requirements and Red Hat practice.  
  • Develop and provide guidance to mitigate risk associated with sensitive employee relations issues, investigations, pre-litigations and managing performance.
  • Participate in global projects related to employment law.

What you will bring

  • Juris Doctor degree (JD) and admission to practice law in the U.S.
  • 5-7+ years of employment law experience, gained as a law firm attorney or in-house counsel with an emphasis on in-house experience
  • Experience advising on global employee relations matters 
  • Employment litigation experience
  • Detail-oriented, with solid analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to organize and analyze complex facts
  • Proactive approach to recognizing business needs and anticipating issues
  • Ability to thoughtfully and thoroughly examine issues and situations, with exceptional sense of judgment in determining appropriate next steps and actions
  • Solid collaboration, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with sound judgment and ability to influence and work with others in a growing, global business
  • Proven project management skills with demonstrated ability to manage global projects
  • Ability to fulfill responsibilities with discretion, when necessary, and to comply with confidentiality obligations imposed by local law and Red Hat policy
  • Ability to persuade and work collaboratively with global team members and stakeholders at all levels across multiple functions and time zones
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and prioritize shifting demands
  • Dedication to fostering an inclusive culture and valuing diverse perspectives

The following are considered a plus:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in a business environment in multiple languages
  • Understanding of the corporate environment and an interest in global employment law and compliance requirements for a global technology company
  • Experience as in-house counsel/attorney at a global company
  • Working knowledge of Spanish

The salary range for this position is typically $150,000- $160,000. Actual offer will be based on your qualifications. This position may be eligible for bonus, and/or equity.
