Meet the team:
The IP department at Dexcom is responsible for a wide variety of issues relating to Intellectual property procurement and enforcement across patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. We engage with stakeholders across R&D and commercial to advise on innovation and competitive landscape of Dexcom technology. This role will work alongside highly passionate IP professionals to enable and accelerate innovation at Dexcom. This individual will have immediate impact in setting direction and strategy for enabling the IP department support Dexcom’s track record of being a fast growth innovative company in the field of health monitoring. The Director, IP Legal Counsel will be responsible for leading the strategic management of intellectual property matters for the company including leading IP Operations efforts as well as management of a global IP portfolio.
Where you come in:
• You will lead the IP Operations team of IP professionals including people managers and individual contributors and set vision and culture, and provide leadership, motivation, mentoring, and coaching
• You will manage the development and implementation of policies and procedures to foster efficient and effective patent procurement, enforcement and licensing activities across the department and company
• You lead vendor management efforts including managing work product, budget and diversity efforts across US and international law firms and legal vendors
• You oversee goal setting, ongoing performance communication, employee development, and training
• You supervise team structure and assignment of tasks and workloads to ensure coverage and minimize inefficiencies and restructuring of team based on changes in personnel and workload as needed
• You collaborate cross-functionally with HR and Recruiting on internal transfers, promotions, professional track changes, hirings, contractor conversions, and conflict resolution
• You will support prosecution efforts in areas of software and UI/UX including directing outside counsel both domestically and globally and interacting with patent offices throughout the world to strengthen and accelerate the issuance of Dexcom’s patented innovations
• Supporting IP litigation, licensing and commercialization activities
• You will take part in other IP efforts as needed including advise technical and business stakeholders on IP matters, Developing, coordinating, and reviewing IP search and analysis projects, including patentability, validity, landscape, freedom to operate and product clearance analysis and Supporting competitive intelligence and monitoring activities
What makes you successful:
• You have a minimum of 10-15 years of related experience including at least 5 years of recent IP operations experience preferably in an inhouse environment and 5 years of patent prosecution experience
• You have 3-5 years of direct people management experience
• You have a J.D. from an accredited law school and a bachelor’s degree in the field of computer science or engineering, electrical engineering or other engineering discipline combined with experience in the fields of software or electrical engineering
• You have strong experience in the field of software and EE IP prosecution, due diligence, infringement, and validity analysis
• You are admitted to a US state bar and USPTO registration in good standing
• You have experience with setting processes and policies for a legal practice, setting and managing budgets, vendor and law firm management experience
• You have experience with IP systems including E-billing, IPMS, and other legal software and technology
• You preferably have one or more of experience working as in-house counsel, experience in patent prosecution in various jurisdictions, experience prosecuting software and EE patents, include addressing 101 rejections and experience in post grant proceedings and/or litigation
• You are able to work in person in San Diego office as required, local within 75 miles is strongly preferred

Exempt Salary Details:
• The annual base salary range for this role is $181,000 to $301,600. Final compensation package will ultimately depend on factors including relevant experience, skillset, knowledge, business needs and market demand.
