Overall Job Description

  • Leadership.   The Assistant General Counsel – Information Security is the lead lawyer for the Chief Information Officer and an active member of the company’s Chief Information Officer Leadership Team, which includes, among others, the Corporate Vice President & Chief Information Officer, the Corporate Vice President, Information Security and Cyber, the Vice Presidents and Chief Information Officers of the company’s four operating sectors, the Chief Data Officer and other information and technology leaders.   The Assistant General Counsel will need to proactively identify potential issues and mitigate associated risks on a wide array of issues related to information security, information governance, digital transformation, cybersecurity, and privacy.     
  • Legal and Strategic Advisor.  The Assistant General Counsel will oversee the small information security legal team and ensure delivery of thoughtful, practical, innovative and timely legal and strategic advice on a wide range of global, federal, state and local legal issues and business initiatives including in continually evolving areas of law such as cybersecurity, privacy, artificial intelligence and data governance; identify and anticipate opportunities and challenges and develop implementable solutions that mitigate potential risks; and continually improve and align the company’s policies, procedures and practices to evolving laws, regulation and company contractual commitments.   
  • Partner and Collaborator.  The Assistant General Counsel will partner and collaborate closely within the law department and with company leadership and functional and business stakeholders at all levels across the company in the U.S. and internationally, including Information Security, Privacy, and global data governance activities.  

Specific Substantive Job Responsibilities / Required Skills

  • Cybersecurity.  The Assistant General Counsel will have extensive experience providing legal and strategic advice on a wide range of cybersecurity issues across the U.S. and internationally.  The Assistant General Counsel will need extensive expertise in cybersecurity requirements applicable to a global publicly traded company that performs significant work for government customers, including current and evolving contractual and regulatory obligations, as well as working such issues as incident response, information sharing, cyber risk identification and mitigation efforts, cyber insurance, and supply chain issues.   The Assistant General Counsel will have knowledge of recent federal cybersecurity initiatives and potential impacts on the company.   
  • Privacy.  The Assistant General Counsel will have extensive experience advising on a wide range of international, federal, state and local privacy requirements and knowledge of emerging laws and trends to facilitate providing proactive and strategic legal advice, shaping the company’s overall privacy program and developing company policies, procedures and processes.     
  • Data Governance/Digital Transformation.  The Assistant General Counsel will have substantive experience providing advice that enhances and evolves company policies, procedures and processes relating to potential data governance, cloud-related issues and governance, and other issues that may arise with respect to the company’s ongoing digital transformation and information technology efforts.     

 Other Qualifications and Requirements  

  • The Assistant General Counsel will have exceptional integrity and outstanding strategic and holistic analytical skills and judgment.
  • The Assistant General Counsel will have the ability to effectively collaborate with and promote and contribute to a team environment that encourages and supports inclusion to drive innovation and reach the best solutions to complex problems.
  • The Assistant General Counsel will have excellent verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals at all levels and areas within the organization, from executive leadership to front-line technical employees, including cybersecurity, privacy, data governance, artificial intelligence, and IT professionals. 
  • The Assistant General Counsel will have excellent issue-identification skills and business judgment. 
  • The Assistant General Counsel will have the ability to self-motivate, take initiative, prioritize competing priorities, and work multiple issues in parallel under minimal supervision, but know when to coordinate with management.
  • The Assistant General Counsel will have the ability to keep track of global, U.S, state, and local legal developments, and learn new substantive areas as required. The Assistant General Counsel will have exposure to government contracting and/or aerospace and defense industry, parameters, and implications.
  • The Assistant General Counsel will have a law Degree from an ABA accredited law school and active bar membership.
  • The Assistant General Counsel will be, or will be able to become, a member of the State Bar in Virginia, capable of being licensed through testing or comity, or, in lieu of licensure, capable of registering as an in-house counsel in accordance with the rules of the applicable State Bar of Virginia. 
  • The Assistant General Counsel is preferred to have 15 or more years of experience at in-house legal department(s), government service, and/or law firm group specializing in cybersecurity, privacy, information technology and security issues. 
  • US citizenship required and the ability to obtain/maintain a clearance

This position reports to Northrop Grumman’s Deputy General Counsel and will be located in the Northrop Grumman Corporate Office in Falls Church, VA.

Salary Range: $244,900 - $352,000
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
