The Strategic Growth, Legal and Finance Division (SGL&F) combines four teams that collaborate to ensure the long-term health of our organization. The SGL&F division partners across divisions to determine how TNTP can sustainably scale its impact in line with its strategic plan. The team was launched in February 2023, and focuses primarily on cross-functional operational, legal, and financial considerations that are difficult for any single division or team to solve on their own. Serving as an organizational “center-pole”, the team collaborates with internal business owners and staff at all levels to co-create and coordinate a shared path forward.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
The General Counsel is the organization’s chief legal advisor, responsible for overseeing the organization’s legal department. They play a strategic role in providing guidance and counsel at the senior levels of TNTP in the areas of legal and reputation risk. Reporting to senior leadership on the SGL&F division, the General Counsel will be responsible for leading all functions of the Legal Department, with a primary focus on contracts, compliance, risk management, 501©(3) governance, insurance, finance, real estate, grants, copyright, data privacy and security, licensing agreements, employment matters and overall advisement to the organization. This important legal work allows the organization to function at a high-level in its support of educational equality in states, school districts, and at individual schools.
As a member of TNTP’s Leadership Team, the General Counsel will work closely with other functional leaders in the organization, including the Chief Executive Officer as well as colleagues across the Executive and Leadership teams. The General Counsel will provide direct management to the Deputy General Counsel and the Legal team.
Some responsibilities and duties may vary, but the role of General Counsel includes:
Provides primary legal counsel and advise the Executive and Leadership team, senior management and other staff on legal issues relating to a wide-ranged of legal issues affecting the organization as well as oversee and advise on matters of corporate governance, finance, contracts, insurance, risk management, real estate, and employment matters;
Lead Legal Strategic Advisory for the organization and inform the development of new TNTP initiatives from a legal perspective and provide guidance on legal issues that help shape the organization’s direction and impact as a whole
Advance Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management for TNTP and develop a mechanism whereby the organization regularly assesses risk enterprise wide; identify and facilitate the process to reduce areas of risk exposure
Manage all litigation from beginning to end, including responding to subpoenas, submitting evidence, witness preparation, attending hearings and settlement conferences on behalf of the organization and overseeing all work conducted by outside counsel
Manage the entire Legal Department, including the Deputy General Counsel, Assistant General Counsel (2), Attorneys (4) and other junior staff assigned to the Legal Department
Manage a significant legal portfolio including revenue and procurement contracts, financial operations, intellectual property, employment law, and business development
Serve as a broad-based resource for TNTP staff and senior management by providing legal counsel, designing compliance programs, and preparing findings, recommendations, templates, and plans to address a diverse range of legal questions associated with TNTP's work and operations
Serve as a key advisor to TNTP’s leadership on issues that prevent risk to TNTP’s reputation, legal and financial condition as a tax-exempt organization. Provide direct crisis management guidance, including advising and drafting external and internal communications
Competencies, Qualifications, and Experiences
We are looking for a candidate to possess the following skills and expertise:
Provide forward thinking legal leadership. As a strategic leader within organization, you bring exceptional legal expertise and corporate governance experience, including substantial experience in litigation, contract management, compliance and risk management.

You are “hands-on”; with an ability to feel at home working at a visionary/strategic level but fully willing to roll up your sleeves and dig into tactical work. You’re proficient in various technical applications and comfortable in a division and organization where everyone works remotely.

Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school and 10+ years of legal experience in a U.S. law firm, government agency, or an in-house legal position
Admitted to practice law from any state within the United States and in good standing
Experienced people manager, team builder and significant experience managing legal teams, litigation/trial, and legal operations
Deep understanding of legal responsibilities and constraints of not-for-profit organizations
Evidence of a strong commitment to non-profit and education issues
Demonstrated track-record effectively advising and building relationships with senior leadership
Professional fluency in English and Spanish (preferred).

WHAT WE OFFER
TNTP offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience in a similar position with the potential for an annual performance-based bonus. The salary range for this position is $151,200- $226,800. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role.

TNTP pays up to an average of 80% of the cost of our medical insurance plans and subsidizes the full cost of dental and vision plans. Our 403(b)-retirement plan has up to 7% matching contribution, as well as free financial planning and coaching services, and up to $600/year payment towards qualifying student loans. TNTP also provides fully paid life insurance, parenting benefits, lifestyle spending accounts, up to 12 weeks of fully paid medical leave, generous vacation time, commuter benefits, referral bonuses, and professional development. New employees start with 5 sick/personal days, accrue 15 days of vacation during their first year of employment, and receive approximately 24 paid holidays each year—including a Winter Break the last 2-weeks of December. We also provide a one-time home office start-up stipend of up to $1,100 and annual refresher amounts of up to $250/year, a TNTP-provided laptop and cell phone, and a communications stipen.
