Sony Pictures Television Nonfiction is seeking a Manager of Business and Legal Affairs. The successful candidate has experience in negotiating and drafting development and production related agreements, is a team player that has the ability to work independently but also supports the needs of the department and thrives in a fast-paced environment. The Manager will be a key member of a multifaceted team that develops, produces, markets/promotes, and licenses content for SPT Nonfiction. Candidates should have a JD degree, be a member of a state bar in good standing and experience working in a television business affairs department, legal affairs department and/or entertainment law firm.

**Core Responsibilities

**

  • Handle the day-to-day business and legal affairs issues for assigned projects, under the supervision of senior team members, as applicable.
  • Negotiate and draft development deals, license agreements, co-production agreements, producer, performer and other talent and production-related contracts in connection with the development and production of non-scripted/reality-based/documentary/alternative programming.
  • Manage and track option periods; draft extension letters/agreements.
  • Manage the contract process through to completion and signature.
  • Work closely with Creative, Production, Finance and other departments to implement best practices, formulate new processes, provide information and business advice, respond to inquiries and provide consultation services on a regular basis.
  • Analyze business and legal issues related to productions.
  • Assist in creating template forms tailored to department’s needs; manage existing forms to ensure consistency with company policies and practices.
  • Assist in compiling agreements and creating an organized database.
  • Summarize, identify, and communicate key terms that require tracking by company.
  • Perform other related duties as requested.

**Requirements

**

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited institution and admitted and in good standing to practice in California (or admitted to, and in good standing with, at least one state bar and eligible to register as in-house counsel in California)
  • 2+ years of experience working in a TV production studio, Business and/or Legal Affairs department or at an entertainment law firm.
  • Strong understanding of entertainment industry customs and practices, from deal making through day-in and day-out of production operations.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation and organizational skills
  • Work effectively under pressure.
  • Self-starter able to advise on rights issues as well as take instruction.
  • Handle multiple tasks frequently with short timelines, prioritize and organize work and to complete assignments in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; professional business demeanor.
  • Collaborative ability in building strong relationships across the industry, both internally and externally, and comfort with interacting at all organizational levels.
  • Use discretion in handling sensitive/confidential information.
  • Willingness and ability to take on matters outside of normal duties.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $71,000-$105,000. This role may also qualify for annual incentive and/or comprehensive benefits. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position.
