Job Description

Role Purpose

NBCUniversal is looking for a dynamic lawyer to join NBCUniversal’s film marketing team. The team provides strategic counsel and support to the marketing departments of Universal Pictures, DreamWorks Animation, Focus Features, and Peacock, along with supporting other marketing initiatives from our corporate divisions. The ideal candidate will have experience advising on entertainment marketing, and supporting clients engaged in the creation of innovative marketing content and campaigns. This position will report to the Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs, Advertising & Marketing.

Job Duties

  • Provide practical, timely advice on marketing campaigns, activations, and the associated agreements, as well as provide legal and business risk analysis to senior executives
  • Review creative materials and advise on the clearance of marketing materials, in addition to related agreements for content created for theatrical, home entertainment, streaming, television, and other content
  • Draft and negotiate marketing services agreements for marketing strategy, social media programming, influencer marketing, live events, premieres, film festivals, and other marketing activations
  • Draft and negotiate production services agreements for development, production, and/or post-production services that relate to creative materials promoting NBCUniversal and its films, programs, platforms, podcasts, or other content
  • Conduct rights analysis of content, talent, and third-party approvals, in consultation with the credits and clearance teams
  • Consult with the Labor & Employment team to advise on union and guild issues implicated by marketing materials
  • Work closely with the Privacy legal team to provide privacy-related advice in connection with promotions, live events, campaigns, marketing websites, and other marketing activities
  • Monitor legal developments impacting marketing activities, and provide regular training to Marketing client groups on legal issues and risks
  • Supervise outside counsel
  • Assist with various Advertising & Marketing group projects

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Member of the California State Bar or New York State Bar, or willingness and qualification to be registered in-house counsel in California
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience for Associate Counsel, or 4+ years of experience for Counsel, in a law firm and/or in-house legal department of a media company

  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to craft innovative, business-friendly solutions, and assist in implementation
  • Proven experience and willingness to advise on novel content and marketing activations, as well as matters of first impression outside of traditional marketing
  • Capacity to balance multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize workload efficiently, and meet deadlines for tasks and assignments

Additional Requirements

  • Must be willing to work in Los Angeles, CA or New York, NY
  • Must have unrestricted authorization to work in the United States
  • This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week

Salary Range: $100,000-$130,000 for Associate Counsel / $140,000-$170,000 for Counsel (both bonus eligible)
