We are a fast-growing distributed/virtual tenant rights law firm dedicated to changing lives—one tenant at a time. We help California tenants who have been illegally evicted, discriminated against, harassed, or forced to endure uninhabitable living conditions recover money from their landlords. We are seeking a rock star Tenant Rights Attorney who can hit the ground running.

The primary responsibilities of the Tenant Rights Attorney are to provide legal services for Tenant Law Group (TLG) clients whose matters do not (yet) satisfy the criteria for representation on a contingency fee basis and whose legal objectives cannot be met through TLG’s Silver (30-minute), Gold (60-minute), or Platinum (90-minute) consultation services (“Hourly Clients”); (2) help Hourly Clients realize their legal outcome as efficiently as possible via services billed hourly; and (3) build a trust relationship between Hourly Clients and TLG so that if and when their matters do become ripe for representation on a contingency fee basis, Hourly Clients will most likely retain TLG to assist them. The Tenant Rights Attorney is a member of TLG’s Growth (i.e., Marketing, Intake, and Engagement) Team. Tenant Rights Attorney is a primarily remote (save the occasional court appearance), part-time (initially at least) position. Although this will be a contract position initially, demand for these services from Hourly Clients may result in the position converting into full-time employment.

This position will be responsible for critically important work, including:

• Provide legal services for Hourly Clients, defined as clients whose matters do not (yet) satisfy the criteria for representation on a contingency fee basis and whose legal objectives cannot be met through TLG’s Silver (30-minute), Gold (60-minute), or Platinum (90-minute) consultation services.
• Act as the primary handling attorney for a portfolio of TLG’s Hourly Client matters.
• Help Hourly Clients realize their legal outcome as efficiently as possible via services billed hourly.
• Before performing legal work for Hourly Clients, clarify their legal objectives to ensure all work billed is directly related to the achievement of these objectives.
• Track all billable time to the nearest tenth (0.1) of an hour, i.e., in six-minute increments, via real-time billing in Clio Manage, TLG’s law practice management software.
• Report all billable work no later than a biweekly billing deadline.
• Draft thorough, descriptive time entries in accordance with TLG’s documented procedure.
• Build a trust relationship between Hourly Clients and TLG so that if and when their matters do become ripe for representation on a contingency fee basis, these Hourly Clients will most likely retain TLG to assist them.
• Where applicable, act as an intermediary between Hourly Clients and their current or former landlord.
• Where applicable, coach Hourly Clients through representation in Small Claims Court actions, where neither party may be represented by counsel.
• Where applicable, represent Hourly Clients at Rent Board hearings.
• Although hourly representation for matters in litigation is generally not in an Hourly Client’s best financial interest, provide efficient, resolution-focused legal representation in unlawful detainer (UD) or other litigation matters as needed. For these matters, attend court hearings, defend clients (and conflict-free friendly third parties) at depositions, take opposing party and third-party depositions, attend mediations, and first- or second-chair trials (depending on experience). Oversee and monitor, with the assistance of an electronic calendaring system, all litigation deadlines. Manage and be ultimately responsible for the pursuit of each Hourly Client’s legal objective, communicating regularly with the Hourly Client either directly or via a Case Manager.
• Oversee, monitor the job performance of, and review the work product of a shared Case Manager.
• Working closely with the shared Case Manager, assist in the preparation and ensure timely delivery of Monthly Status Updates to all Hourly Clients.
• Assist the Operations Team in the revision of TLG’s policies, systems, and procedures to ensure efficient operations.

• You work at a fast pace with the ability to move between tasks quickly, are not overwhelmed with volume or by deadlines, and spend time on tasks that add value.

• You are self-directed, able to assess a situation and determine what needs to be done and then do it.

While we do not have a minimum years-in-practice requirement, the Tenant Rights Attorney should have prior experience practicing housing rights law, landlord-tenant law, or real estate litigation. Experience representing parties in unlawful detainer actions is preferred. The Tenant Rights Attorney must be an active member of the State Bar of California with a discipline-free record. The Tenant Rights Attorney must be able to manage a portfolio of matters, complete tasks with minimal handholding, and be willing to grow with the firm. The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude and sense of humor, and be willing to follow policies, systems, and procedures.

Initially, this will be a part-time contract position, and the Tenant Rights Attorney absolutely must be available to work for at least twenty hours per week. Work will be done 100% virtually. Compensation depends on experience.
