The Senior Associate General Counsel, Global Legal Strategy Head is responsible for assessing, developing, and leading strategic initiatives for the company, with a substantial focus on new geographic markets. The Senior Associate General Counsel will have two direct reports and will report to the Vice President, Global Legal Strategy & Policy Counsel.

This team member will need to have demonstrated ability to independently identify practical legal solutions to complex challenges, strong focus on executing goals and the ability to influence others. The Senior Associate General Counsel will be responsible for cross-functional engagements with related Legal, OEC, or cross-function counterparts as needed to inform strategic initiatives and build cohesive AbbVie strategies. The Senior Associate General Counsel will also develop key external engagements for active policy shaping and strategy.

The Senior Associate General Counsel also will need demonstrated leadership communication skills as they will be responsible for providing legal advice to senior leadership in the Company. This position helps business leaders create strategies that will be effective, sustainable and executable within and outside the United States. The position also advises on critical access strategies and initiatives and supports innovative solutions in a fast-evolving market and regulatory landscape. This role partners with Government Affairs to help shape and prepare for regulatory changes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing global strategies and initiatives that are prioritized by leaders as having enterprise impact and involve external environment shaping, high ambiguity and complex combination of initiatives to solve.
  • Working with Government Affairs, responsible for developing strategies to shape external stakeholders including government agencies, industry associations, industry coalitions and other third parties in the healthcare ecosystem.
  • Consistently finds opportunities to strengthen and improve team culture of agility, prioritization, innovative thinking, and AbbVie Ways of Working.
  • Provides progress updates to senior leaders.
  • Continually monitors current and future external trends, advises on potential impacts to AbbVie, and determines prioritization level needed to develop strategies – advising AbbVie on likely future developments and needs in regulatory, policy, and market landscape.
  • Supports transition of strategies developed in the Global Strategy & Policy Legal group into executional stages, engaging cross-functionally and with the business to establish operational plans.

Required Qualifications:

  • JD with active State Bar membership, in good standing.
  • 12+ years of experience with a focus on life sciences, 6+ years experience in-house preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, communication, leadership, and influence skills
  • Adept at coordinating and facilitating cross-functional efforts and gaining alignment from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in high-pressure, matrixed environments.
  • Experience in covering an array of topic areas and adapting to new subject matter/ arenas rapidly and effectively.
